The 18th annual New York International Fringe Festival - FringeNYC presents THE SCREENWRITER DIES OF HIS OWN FREE WILL, a new metafictional comedy on the art of the deal by FringeNYC veteran Jim Shankman. Craig J. George directs a cast of two including Jim Shankman* (Winner, Best Actor - United Solo 2013) and Steven Mark Friedman*. Kevin Scott Hall, a long-time mover and shaker in New York's cabaret scene, begins his 20th season of his popular cabaret workshop, That Singing Feeling, with Monday night classes from June 1 through July 13, 2015. (There will be no class on July 6.) Two showcases follow at The Duplex, Sunday, July 19 (4:30 pm), and Tuesday, July 21 (7:00 pm). Classes are limited to six participants.

Jazz headliner Carol Fredette and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Lillias White will be among the eleven performers honored at the 30th Annual Bistro Awards gala, which recognizes outstanding achievement in New York cabaret, jazz, and comedy. The celebration will take place on Wednesday, March 4, at 6:30pm at Gotham Comedy Club, 208 W. 23rd Street.

Last September, after appearing at the popular Manhattan open mic cabaret show, Salon, Bistro and MAC Award-winning singer Amy Beth Williams was struck by a car near her home in Brooklyn. Now an all-star roster of Williams' fellow cabaret performers and friends will stage a benefit show, Once In Love With Amy, at Don't Tell Mama tonight, January 21 at 7 pm, to help replace the funds Williams has lost during her extensive recovery.

Americans are particularly spoiled when it comes to what we expect from films, television, and theater. We have to have a presentation that follows a very predicable format, including a likeable hero or heroine, antagonist, life conflict that mirrors our own, and a climax in which good wins over evil. We want to leave these experiences feeling completely uplifted and good about ourselves. What is perceived as negative isn't even part of our collective consciousness.

MetroStar Top 5 to Begin Two-Week Finale on Monday

On Monday, in one of the most competitive MetroStar competitions to date, five finalists were selected to move on to the two-week finals of the 7th annual MetroStar Talent Challenge. The five finalists, who will go head-to-head the next two Mondays, August 18 and 25, are Joanna Morton Gary, Lindsey Holloway, Leah Jennings, David LaMarr and Kristoffer Lowe. The Top 5, narrowed down from a group of nine semifinalists, are the last singers singing from an initial pool of 48 when the 8-week competition began on July 7.
