PSO to Present 'The Composer is Dead' Concert, 5/16

On Saturday, May 16, at 2:30 pm at Richardson Auditorium, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO) presents Lemony Snicket's musical performance piece for children The Composer is Dead, a not-to-be-missed family concert in the grand tradition of Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf.' Narrator Julian Grant unveils and interrogates every instrument of the orchestra as he solves Lemony Snicket's playful and perplexing murder mystery set in the symphony hall. Blending in more magical and bewitching music, the concert also features John Williams' Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Suite and Anatol Liadov's Baba-Yaga, Op. 56. PSO. Music Director Rossen Milanov conducts.

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University, under the leadership of Artistic Director Diane Paulus, announces the casting of the world premiere of Crossing, an opera by Matthew Aucoin, directed by Diane Paulus, featuring the chamber orchestra A Far Cry, produced in association with Music-Theatre Group.

Due to popular demand, American Opera Projects and LivelyWorks have added a second performance of Two Premieres and a Reunion, a special evening of music by composer Conrad Cummings Wednesday September 10th, 2014. The second performance will take place at 9:00 p.m., immediately after the initial 7:30 p.m. performance. Both performances will be held at The National Opera Center, 330 Seventh Avenue, Manhattan.

Washington National Opera (WNO) today announced details for the third season of the American Opera Initiative, its comprehensive commissioning program that brings contemporary American stories to the stage while fostering the talents of rising American composers and librettists. Three teams of new opera composers and librettists—John Liberatore and Niloufar Talebi, Jake Runestad and David Johnston, and Rene Orth and Jason Kim—will premiere new 20-minute operas, each based on a contemporary American story, in a semi-staged concert performance on November 21, 2014 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater.

Minnesota Opera to Serve DINNER AT EIGHT During its 2016-17 Season

At its annual meeting today, Minnesota Opera announced its commission of Dinner at Eight, a new comic opera by composer William Bolcom and librettist Mark Campbell, based on the play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber. Minnesota Opera will give the world premiere during its 2016-2017 season at Ordway Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
