The Metropolitan Opera's popular Summer HD Festival returns to Lincoln Center Plaza with screenings of ten acclaimed productions from the Met's Emmy Award-winning Live in HD series, including four new productions from the 2013-14 season.

Described by Opera News as the “lyric soprano who truly seems to have it all,” Ailyn Pérez takes the stage at leading opera houses on both sides of the Atlantic in 2014-15 for an exciting new season that features house debuts at both the Metropolitan Opera and Houston Grand Opera, the latter also serving as a role debut for Pérez as Desdemona in Verdi's Otello.

Anthony Freud, general director of Lyric Opera of Chicago, announced today that the company is reporting a break even operating performance for fiscal year 2014. Lyric has operated in the black for 26 of the past 27 years-a record among the country's not-for-profit music and performing-arts companies.

Opera Australia is pleased to announce that internationally renowned tenor, Jonas Kaufmann, will perform a second concert in Sydney on Sunday 17 August at Sydney Opera House. This performance will follow Jonas Kaufmann's two other concerts in Sydney and Melbourne.

“The party's over,” wrote Betty Comden & Adolph Green in BELLS ARE RINGING. “It's time to call it a day.” The opera season at the Metropolitan said its farewells to 2013-2014 on May 10 with a bel canto doubleheader of Rossini's LA CENERENTOLA (a shot heard round the world via radio and The Met's LIVE IN HD) and Bellini's IL PURITANI--not a bad swan song, considering the singing talent involved.

In our age of 20-somethings suffering from arrested development, they say “25 is the new 15.” This certainly was not true at the Met auditions concert (formally, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Grand Finals Concert, a real mouthful!). At the opera house, Sunday afternoon, the concert showcased nine competitors, all between 24 and 29 but mature artists with poise, acting ability and, yes, voices definitely worth hearing again.

Lyric's annual Subscriber Appreciation Concert, which this year features renowned soprano and Lyric creative consultant Renee Fleming and celebrated tenor Jonas Kaufmann, has only a few seats left. Tonight's program, which begins at 7:30 pm, is a thank-you performance for Lyric's more than 25,000 subscribers. The concert with the Lyric Opera Orchestra, conducted by Lyric Music Director Sir Andrew Davis includes selections by Verdi, Massenet, Gounod, and others.

Maybe Richard Eyre's new production of WERTHER for the Metropolitan Opera, with strong performances by German tenor Jonas Kaufmann and French mezzo Sophie Koch, should have been called WERTHER: THE BACKSTORY or WERTHER: A FOOL'S GUIDE. Eyre took what was otherwise a beautiful and interesting interpretation of the opera and added a prologue and other details (including action leading up to a self-inflicted shot in the chest)--just in case the audience needed some hand-holding to better understand what was going on.

Two of opera's greatest artists, Jonas Kaufmann and Sophie Koch, will appear together in Massenet's sublime adaptation of Goethe's revolutionary and tragic romance, Werther, which will be shown Live in HD from the Met today, March 15, at 12:55 p.m., and on Sunday, March 16, at 12 p.m. A unique behind-the-scenes tour of the grand opera house takes place during intermission including interviews with the stars. World renowned tenor Jonas Kaufmann makes his Carnegie Hall recital debut tonight, February 20 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage with pianist Helmut Deutsch. The German tenor sings selections from Schumann's Zwolf Gedichte as well as his Dichterliebe. Also on the program is Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder, Op. 91; and Liszt's Tre sonetti di Petrarca.
