Tisch New Theatre will present HAIRSPRAY, the musical based on the 1988 film written and directed by John Waters, April 1-4 at the NYU Skirball Center. With music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, HAIRSPRAY the musical premiered on Broadway in 2002 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Off-Broadway's award-winning Ruthless! The Musical wants to make Good Friday even gooder! (We really should stay in school.) There will be a special added performance tomorrow, Good Friday, at 8 PM. The Meeting* has been called "delicious and delightfully droll" by The New York Post and "hilarious and sardonic" by The Village Voice. A story for Slate.com called the evening "so deliciously icy that it left me shivering with fear and delight." The 2014-2015 season sold out after a profile in The New York Times "Arts & Leisure" section. The March show will honor the celebrated singer and songwriter Elton John with special guests Natalie Joy Johnson, Lance Horne and The Quinns (Nadia Quinn and Ameara Wahhab) with others to be announced. Tracy Stark serves as the show's Music Director.
Today, producer Mark Goucher has confirmed that following the phenomenal success of the current UK tour, the new production of Hairspray will return at the end of summer 2017 to once again tour the UK. This second tour of the smash hit musical will visit venues across the country until the spring of 2018. Casting, dates and locations for the 2017/18 tour will be announced in due course.
Drag icons COCO PERU, CHAD MICHAELS and PEACHES CHRIST will star in the long-awaited New York Premiere of THE WITCHES OF EAST VILLAGE, a theatrical parody based on the iconic film 'The Witches of Eastwick'. This original stage show was written and directed by Joshua Grannell. The lecture auditorium in Hitchcock Hall, normally the venue in which engineering presentations are given, was transformed into a brightly colored, wildly patterned scene straight out of the '60s when Ohio State's Off the Lake Productions took to the stage Friday to perform "Hairspray." From the opening number that brought a taste of morning in Baltimore to the campus of OSU to the cast's final bows, "Hairspray" created an atmosphere bursting with energy and exuding undeniable passion.
