In the 16th and 17th centuries, Amsterdam was a haven for Jewish refugees escaping the Inquisition in Portugal. A large Sephardic community resettled there and the Jews were able to practice their religion openly and peacefully. So much so that Amsterdam was often referred to as the "New Jerusalem." That brings us to the subject of the next NJT production, David Ives' New Jerusalem, the Interrogation of Baruch de Spinoza at Torah Talmud Congregation: Amsterdam, July 27, 1656, the true story of Jewish philosopher Baruch de Spinoza who was excommunicated from the Jewish community of Amsterdam in the mid-1600's in order to keep the peace for that city's Jews.

At STAGES St. Louis, efforts to protect and serve the citizens of this nation don't end when the curtain goes down on Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic wartime tale, South Pacific.
STAGES St. Louis ends their season with an wonderfully mounted production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC. It's a classic musical absolutely filled to the brim with memorable songs, many of which have become standards. In fact, you'll likely find yourself humming any number of them as you head home after the show. Then there are the social issues that this Pulitzer prize winning drama tackles, which were groundbreaking for their time, yet still retain their impact today. Sadly, issues concerning race and acceptance have only intensified in our current volatile and divisive environment. Sparked by an excellent cast, this is an incredibly touching testament to the power this work still wields.
A bright and brand new production for STAGES St. Louis, 9 to 5, The Musical has audiences laughing, crying, and cheering the exploits of Violet, Judy, and Doralee. Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton, this hilarious musical romp explores friendship and revenge while its heroines attempt to break the glass ceiling and take control of the company that has always kept them down. BroadwayWorld has a sneak peek behind the scenes below!
It's not surprising that the 1980 film 9 to 5 was turned into a musical, since it's revenge driven farcical plot is a natural fit, and it's a period piece, so it has that going for it as well. Plus, you have Dolly Parton, whose physical attributes sometimes make one forget how great a songwriter she is, providing material written for the show, and adding pieces plucked from her own recordings. It's a great show for a strong and varied female cast, and STAGES' current production doesn't disappoint, with the lead roles filled by outstanding performers. And, one thing is certain, it's a real crowd-pleaser, generating tons of laughs, and a number of memorable moments.

Like a lot of writer John Logan's works NEVER THE SINNER explores the darker side of humanity. It was his first play, but you wouldn't know it by the intensity it spawns as its tale unfolds. The New Jewish Theatre is presenting a taut production of this piece which focuses our attention on Leopold and Loeb, the teenage purveyors of the 'crime of the century' in the early 1920's. It's a well crafted and dramatic show that only breaks the palpable tension that's been building in the air for an intermission about half way through it. What makes this story particularly timely, in my estimation, is that these two 'kids' became enamored with Nietzche's idea of there being 'supermen' who are above the law due to their supposed superiority. That's a drastic simplification of the concept as a whole, but the point is that we can still see this type of thinking in the current world we live in. This is a show that's definitely worthy of your time and attention.
As the New Jewish Theatre continues its 20th Season with John Logan's Never the Sinner fromMarch 16 - April 2, we bring to the stage a uniquely chilling love story between two brilliant and privileged young men as they are tried for what became known in 1924 as the "crime of the century." This exquisite Off Broadway hit explores the complex relationship between these two who longed to create a private world of fevered intellect and romantic passion.
