Gallery New World Stages Presents Touring Art Exhibition from the Smithsonian and the Kennedy Center, 7/2-8/25

Gallery New World Stages, located at 343 West 49th Street, today announced the summer opening of SUSTAINING / CREATING. This exhibition presents a national juried exhibition of works by 15 young emerging artists with disabilities. The show will be on view from July 2, 2013 through August 25, 2013, with an Opening Reception on July 12 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Curator Bernard Stote manages the group show.

New Playwrights Collective The Welders Set to Produce 5 New Plays in 3 Years

Five Washington-based playwrights have formed a new playwrights' collective dedicated exclusively to developing and producing new work. The Welders' inaugural members-playwrights Bob Bartlett, Renee Calarco, Allyson Currin, Caleen Sinnette Jennings, and Gwydion Suilebhan and Executive and Creative Director Jojo Ruf-will write, develop, and produce new plays over the course of the next three years. After their three-year term is complete, the five playwrights will give The Welders' entire operations-everything from the logo to the checking account-to a new generation of five playwrights, who will carry The Welders forward for another three years, and so on into the foreseeable future.

American Airlines today launches daily nonstop service between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Dublin Airport (DUB), adding a new destination to American's extensive network and giving customers traveling from Dublin nonstop connections out of JFK to cities throughout North, Central and South America.

Rothhaar is the final of the four major players in the film to be announced, joining Rob Lowe (John F. Kennedy), Ginnifer Goodwin (Jacqueline Kennedy) and Michelle Trachtenberg (Marina Oswald).

Washington National Opera Premieres APPROACHING ALI Tonight

Washington National Opera (WNO) will present the world premiere of Approaching Ali tonight and Saturday, June 8-9, 2013 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. Approaching Ali features music by composer D.J. Sparr and a libretto by Mark Campbell and Davis Miller, based on Miller's own autobiographical novella. This new work is the first hourlong opera created under the auspices of the American Opera Initiative, WNO's new commissioning program for contemporary American opera, and will be directed by Nicole Watson in her WNO debut.

Twenty 2013 YoungArts Students Named Presidential Scholars in the Arts

As the exclusive nominating agency for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts, the National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) congratulates the 49th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars, announced earlier this month by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. The 20 Scholars in the Arts, all 2013 YoungArts Winners, were nominated to The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars by YoungArts, and selected based on academic, civic and artistic achievement. The award, presented on behalf of the President of the United States, is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an artistically talented graduating high school senior. Each year, up to 141 high school seniors are recognized as U.S. Presidential Scholars for their accomplishments in academics and the arts.

BWW Reviews: Rediscover THE GUARDSMAN at Kennedy Center

A wealth of talent has come together to produce The Guardsman at the Kennedy Center. It is a handsome production, worthy of any stage in the nation. Playwright and translator Richard Nelson has created a multi-layered dramatic comedy based closely on Ferenc Molnar's original 1910 play. With direction by Gregory Mosher, The Guardsman stars Finn Wittrock and Sarah Wayne Callies as married actors.
