The world premiere production of the Frank McGuinness adaptation of James Joyce's The Dead has begun rehearsal at Dublin's Abbey Theatre, under the direction of former Abbey and current Guthrie Artistic Director Joe Dowling. The Dead will begin previews on December 5, will open December 11 and will play through January 19, 2013.

The Guthrie Theater today announced the full cast and creative team for the Theater's 2012 production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, presented by U.S. Bank. The perennial holiday favorite, now in its 38th year at the Guthrie, will feature a script by British playwright Crispin Whittell and be directed by Joe Chvala. Chvala is the founder and artistic director of the Flying Foot Forum and has previously served as movement director for the production. Longtime Guthrie actor J.C. Cutler will take on the role of grubby miser Ebenezer Scrooge. Cutler has been involved in 30 productions at the Guthrie since 1993, including five productions of A Christmas Carol - appearing as Ebenezer Scrooge (2011), Bob Cratchit (1995, 1997), Banker (1996) and Young Scrooge (1993, 1994) - and was last seen on a Guthrie stage in this past spring's American premiere of Conor McPherson's The Birds.

The Guthrie Theater today announced that lifetime Board Director Polly Grose will be on hand at the theater on October 21 following the matinee performances to sign copies of her book Guthrie Theater: The First Fifty Years. A collection of essays selected and compiled by Grose, the book provides compelling first-hand perspectives from luminaries throughout the Guthrie's history and members of the Twin Cities community, spiced through with no-holds-barred opinion and curated by Grose's own affectionate and knowledgeable viewpoint on the Guthrie.

Appomattox, a sprawling political epic by Christopher Hampton taking place in 1865 and 1965 at the close of the American Civil War and the pivotal Civil Rights Era, opened Friday, October 5 at the Guthrie Theater to continue the Hampton Celebration. The play runs until November 11 on the Guthrie's McGuire Proscenium Stage, and is directed by David Esbjornson (Broadway/London: Driving Miss Daisy, A Few Good Men; Broadway: The Goat or Who is Sylvia?, The Ride Down Mt. Today Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman issued a joint proclamation declaring September 21, 2012, Christopher Hampton Day in both cities. The announcement comes on the same day as the opening of Hampton's Tales from Hollywood on the Wurtele Thrust Stage at the Guthrie, the beginning of the Guthrie's celebration of Hampton's work and the first show of its 50th season.

The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul and the Guthrie today announced a new partnership that will link the two organizations in an ongoing series of film screenings and programming that will provide a new home for the popular filmed-theater series NT Live originating from the National Theatre of London, as well as films selected and curated by the Film Society inspired by the Guthrie's upcoming 2012-2013 season, its 50th. All films in the partnership will be screened at the Film Society's St. Anthony Main Theatre, located at 115 SE Main Street in Minneapolis.

The Guthrie Theater announces the presentation of Trick Boxing by Sossy Mechanics, a fast-paced physical comedy full of rapid-fire dialogue, "Fred-and-Ginger style dancing" and puppetry that The New York Times called "the best show I have seen" when it played at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2010. Trick Boxing premiered to great success at the 2002 Minnesota Fringe Festival, has since played to audiences around the U.S., Canada and the U.K., and will appear in the Guthrie's Dowling Studio from tonight, August 17-September 2, 2012.

Directed by Gary Gisselman (Guthrie: A Christmas Carol, Lost in Yonkers), The Sunshine Boys features veteran actors Peter Michael Goetz and Raye Birk as Willie Clark and Al Lewis, respectively, a pair of crabby, retired vaudeville comedians persuaded to reunite after 11 years apart-despite the fact that they hate each other. Stephanie Rothenberg leads the cast of Roman Holiday as Princess Anne-a radiant young woman in Rome on a widely publicized European tour who sneaks away from her royal duties to explore the city. Rothenberg recently made her Broadway debut stepping into the role of Rosemary in the Tony-nominated revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Edward Watts plays Joe Bradley-a handsome, crafty American newspaper reporter who charms the princess. Watts most recently appeared in the long-running production of The Fantasticks in New York City. This song-filled delight-based on the iconic 1953 Paramount Pictures film starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck-includes timeless music and lyrics by Cole Porter and a book by Paul Blake. The production plays from tonght, June 9 - August 19 on the McGuire Proscenium Stage and features soul-stirring Porter standards like "Easy to Love," "Just One of Those Things" and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye."
