Playwright Lynn Nottage, author of RUINED, hosted a fund-raising party for the New Black Fest, an upcoming festival which will 'showcase innovative work by and about black people,' The New York Times reports. The first New Black Fest will be held this fall and will feature readings and panel discussions; the festival's organizers and supporters are currently raising funds and seeking advisers.
SummerStage has announced the continuation of their first theater season with American Schemes, written by Radha Blank and Directed by Charlotte L. Brathwaite. The Public Theater began Shakespeare in the Park performances of A Winter's Tale, directed by Michael Greif on June 9. The Toronto production will feature four of the original cast of five including Akosua Amo-Adem (who won the SummerWorks 2009 Award for best new emerging artist for her portrayal), Antonio Cayonne, Jessica Greenberg and Kevin Walker. Last night, May 23, the Drama Desk Association hosted the 55th Annual Drama Desk Awards ceremony at the F.H. LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center. Former Drama Desk Award winner Patti LuPone hosted the ceremony, which honored the best of Broadway and off in the 2009-2010 season.
