Over 70 productions of local and international artists representing six continents - North America, South America, Europe, Australia, Africa and Asia -- will visit the stages of La MaMa during the 2016-17 season, the company's 55th year of presenting world-class experimental music, theater and dance, it has been announced by Mia Yoo, La MaMa's Artistic Director.
SIX CHARACTERS - a new puppet and multi-media work created by the renowned writer-director Theodora Skipitares, and inspired by Luigi Pirandello's classic play SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR - will be given its world premiere production this spring, presented by La MaMa in association with Skysaver Productions at theEllen Stewart Theatre (66 E. 4 St.), with performances now to April 16. The 10th Annual New York Innovative Theatre Awards Ceremony will celebrate the Off-Off-Broadway Theatre community and honor this past season's greatest achievements. The awards will be presented by celebrities from the theatre community at large.

In Ionesco's absurdist masterpiece, 'The Chairs,' an elderly couple set out chairs for an audience to listen to a world-changing pronouncement from an orator who turns out to be a deaf-mute. Puppet theater maestro Theodora Skipitares wondered what would happen if the chairs themselves were world-changers. Her newest work, 'The Chairs,' presented by La MaMa E.T.C. May 22 to June 8, is a response to Ionesco, but that's where the similarity ends. Skipitares' chairs are incarnations of people like Malala, Stephen Hawking and Nelson Mandela and their messages are, well, not absurd.
In 1962, when Ellen Stewart invited puppet artists from Korea, La MaMa began a long love affair with all things puppetry. The form has been an integral part of La MaMa's artistic vision for more than a half-century. The institution demonstrates the depth and breadth of its commitment with the La MaMa Puppet Series 2013, which, for three weeks (November 7 - 24), fills all three La MaMa theaters with a wide array of productions-both emerging and established artists, from countries around the world, offering something for theatergoers of all ages.

The Sixth Voice 4 Vision Puppet Festival (www.voice4vision.org) will be presented December 8 to 18, 2011 by Theater for the New City to celebrate the work of a unique group of New York artists who have been creating dynamic puppet theater for many years.
