BWW Review: Portland Stage Continues the Dickens Tradition

When Portland Stage rang down the curtain on its last of the 2016 season performances of Dickens' A Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve, the company was celebrating a long cherished tradition that has delighted generations of Maine theatre goers since 1996. Directed and designed by Anita Stewart, the production serves not only to bring holiday cheer to the company's audiences, but also to advance the theatre's commitment to theatre for children.

BWW Review: The Re-Imagined Beauty of New Ohio Theatre's A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Adapted by Matt Opatrny and directed/choreographed by Jessica Burr, the eleven-member troupe Blessed Unrest recently opened A Christmas Carol at the New Ohio Theatre. This "theatre for the adventurous" comprised of a diverse ensemble that brings new and bold productions to NY audiences, brings a unique and surprising experience to those expecting a traditional retelling of Dickens' novella. So saying, this is a tasteful yet eclectic and unique experience indeed; Opatrny and Burr prove that they understood the true essence of the original story while also showing that they clearly had a wonderful time bringing their creative vision to life.

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Succeeds in Finding The Heart of The Show

Almost everyone loves Christmas. Almost, since there is The Grinch and an old fellow named Ebenezer Scrooge. The latter is the main character in Charles Dickens' novel titled 'A Christmas Carol.' His story is quite popular, not just among literature fans, because it served as inspiration to some TV shows, movies, and, of course, musicals. Scrooge is the grumpy, greedy old man who had a change of heart during Christmas day, after being visited by three Ghosts of Christmas.

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Lyceum Theatre

Despite being a decade-long tradition in New York, Alan Menken and Lynn Ahrens' musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol had never previously been staged in London. Based on Charles Dickens' classic novella, the story we all know and love is brought to life with a thrilling score. This week LMTO brought the musical to the Lyceum Theatre (home of the West End production of The Lion King) for a one-night-only concert staging.

Goodman Theatre Artistic Director Robert Falls announced today that his longtime creative collaborator, Artistic Associate and Producer Steve Scott, will direct the theater's production of Eugene O'Neill's Ah, Wilderness! this spring. Scott assumes this responsibility from Falls, who was originally announced as the production's director.

BWW Review: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis's Timeless Classic A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Perhaps the best way to approach Dickens' venerable A CHRISTMAS CAROL is straight-forward, with a generous helping of music, sterling performances, and some cool effects to liven up the proceedings. After all, the story, which dates from 1843, has been reworked, parodied, and used as a device by nearly every sitcom and animated show ever made. So, what's old seems new again in The Repertory of St. Louis' current presentation for the holidays. And, what a treat it is. David H. Bell's adaptation is faithful to the spirit and language of the story, which occurs when the industrial revolution has wreaked havoc on the lives of both the old and young. Filled with energy and enthusiasm, this is an absolute must-see for the Christmas season!

BWW Review: John Kevin Jones Delightfully Re-creates Charles Dickens' Readings of A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Since its first publication in 1843, Charles Dickens' holiday classic, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, has been adapted countless times for various stages, screens and pages, but undoubtedly the most authentic presentations of the story of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts who assist in his transformation into a kind and generous soul were the numerous live readings the author gave during the last 18 years of his life.

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Athens Theatre

From December 1 to 18, the beloved tale of Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' comes to life at the Athens Theatre in Deland. This particular telling of the story is a musical version with singing and dancing numbers. While I'm not sure I particularly enjoyed the musical version of the show, I can definitely say that the outstanding performances of the cast are well worth the cost of a ticket.

Scroll down for a peek at Rodriguez in action!
