Produced by Emmy award-winning HMS Media, the program premieres May 1 at 8:00 p.m. on WTTW Channel 11. Shakespeare's 450th birthday on April 23 begins the internationally recognized Shakespeare Quadricentennial Celebration through 2016, marking 400 years of Shakespeare's legacy since his death in 1616. On this occasion, Chicago's cultural community heralds the prolific poet and playwright's lasting impact on our lives-through our everyday speech and in cultural institutions, schools and neighborhoods across the city.
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) will host three free Hip-Hop Poetry Open Mic events this spring on March 10,April 7 and May 5. Written, directed and with music by the Q Brothers, Othello: The Remix is receiving rave reviews from audiences across Chicago, playing to sold-out houses and nightly standing ovations. The high energy, cross-genre production is stimulating theater attendance from under-represented audiences in Chicago with noticeable increases in multi-generational and culturally diverse audiences. The production continues to break records for Chicago Shakespeare's longstanding CST for $20 program, which offers $20 tickets for CST productions to students and young professionals under the age of 35. Following the extended run of the American premiere in Chicago, Othello: The Remix will return to London (where the production first performed last fall as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad's 'Globe to Globe' festival at Shakespeare's Globe). The three-week engagement at London's Unicorn Theatre will take place September 11-28, 2013. The Postal Service's June 14 show at Brooklyn's Barclays Center sold out within hours of going on sale last Friday. Due to overwhelming demand, a second show at the venue has been added on June 15.
