Lark and FONCA Announce 2013 Mexico/U.S. Word Exchange Playwrights; Readings Set for 12/14-16

The Lark Play Development Center in collaboration with Mexico's National Fund for Culture and Arts (FONCA) is pleased to announce the 2013 Mexico/ U.S. Playwright Exchange Program. For the eighth year the Lark will host playwrights from Mexico and pair them with bilingual U.S. playwrights, actors, and directors for a ten day cultural exploration that establishes ongoing channels of communication between artists in both countries.

Amazon Launches Mexico Kindle Store

Amazon today launched the Mexico Kindle Store (www.amazon.com.mx), offering Mexican customers the largest selection of the most popular eBooks, the most Spanish-language best sellers, over 1,500 free books in Spanish and a broad selection of titles from leading Mexican authors and publishers. In total, the Kindle Store offers over 2 million titles, hundreds of thousands of which are exclusive, and more than 70,000 in Spanish, including titles from authors such as Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Isabel Allende and Paulo Coelho, among other Mexican and internationally known authors. The Mexican Museum Introduces New Arts & Letters Council

The Mexican Museum, the premier West Coast museum of Mexican, Chicano and Latino art, culture and heritage, announces its new Arts & Letters Council. The council, whose Honorary Chair is the highly-acclaimed Mexican American film actor, director and producer, Edward James Olmos, currently comprises 51 accomplished arts and letters professionals found across the United States and Mexico, all of whom stand firmly in support of the development and construction of The Mexican Museum's new home at 706 Mission Street in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Arts District.

TED TALKS EDUCATION Airs on PBS Tonight

TED, the non-profit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, and WNET, in partnership with PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), will co-produce TED's first-ever original television special this spring, featuring content created and curated exclusively for the show. The TED TALKS EDUCATION one-hour program will feature a mix of teachers and education advocates delivering short, high-impact talks on the theme of teaching and learning. The special was taped before a live audience on April 4, 2013 in the BAM Harvey Lichtenstein Theater of New York's Brooklyn Academy Of Music, and will air nationally on PBS tonight, May 7, 2013 at 10:00 p.m. EST. TED TALKS EDUCATION is part of American Graduate: Let's Make It Happen, a nationwide public media initiative made possible by CPB to help communities identify and implement solutions to the high school dropout crisis.

Broad Stage and L.A. Opera to Present DULCE ROSA World Premiere, 5/17-6/9

The Broad Stage and L.A. Opera have joined forces to co-produce the world premiere of Dulce Rosa, a fully-staged, two-act opera by composer Lee Holdridge and librettist Richard Sparks, based on the Isabel Allende short story, Una Venganza ("An Act of Vengeance").

Mixed Blood Theatre's IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES Runs 4/5-27

This tale of courage and sisterhood is inspired by the true story of the Dominican Republic's Mirabal siblings whose underground resistance proved that despots are not invincible. IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES, on stage April 5-27 at Mixed Blood Theatre, will be performed in Spanish and English (with translated supertitles in both languages). This bilingual world premiere of Julia Alavarez's 1994 New York Times best-selling historical fiction is written by Caridad Svich, author of Mixed Blood's 2010 play based on Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits.

Shakespeare Guild to Welcome Authors Paul Dickson, Thomas Keith and Susannah Carson, Spring 2013

After memorable conversations with such fascinating guests as the New Yorker's JOHN LAHR (September 17), Hunter College's IRENE DASH (October 22), the McCarter Theatre's NAGLE JACKSON (November 19), Columbia University's JAMES SHAPIRO (December 17), and The Lion King's JULIE TAYMOR (January 28), The Shakespeare Guild now looks forward to evenings in Manhattan's National Arts Club that will focus on three engaging authors: PAUL DICKSON, THOMAS KEITH, and SUSANNAH CARSON. These events will be followed in May by a fourth gathering that will take us to another venerable institution, The Players, and place the spotlight on EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER, a celebrity portrait painter who has been compared to the legendary John Singer Sargent.

This 50-minute, high-energy introduction to opera is recommended for audiences ages 5 and up. Performances are today, February 17, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

INTAR Announces 2013 Winter/Spring Season

INTAR (Lou Moreno, Artistic Director/John McCormack, Executive Director) today announced the two plays for its Winter/Spring 2013 season: Lucy Loves Me, written by Migdalia Cruz, directed by Lou Moreno, and Pinkolandia written by Andrea Thome, directed by Jose Zayas. Lucy Loves Me will begin performances Off-Broadway Friday February 22nd continuing through March 24th. Pinkolandia begins performances Friday, May 3rd and will continue through May 26th. Both Lucy Loves Me and Pinkoldandia are products of INTAR's legendary Maria Irene Fornés Hispanic Playwrights-in-Residence Laboratory (MIF HPRL).

Santa Fe Artists and Art Organizations Present SPARK Reading to Honor Veterans Today, 11/14

A free, script-in-hand reading of SPARK, written by Caridad Svich and directed by Daniel Banks, will perform at Teatro Paraguas Studio in Santa Fe tonight, November 14 at 7pm. Part of an international reading scheme which aims to honor veterans of wars recent and past and to promote spiritual healing, SPARK will be performed across the United States and abroad throughout the month of November; thirty-nine readings of the play are currently confirmed.

The initial line-up of organizations that will present 2012 OBIE Award-winning playwright Caridad Svich's new play Spark has been announced. This work, which is about a family of sisters who live in North Carolina, one of whom is a returning veteran from a recent war, is being made available for local presentations during the month of November (and selected venues in October) in time for Veteran's Day and around the national US elections.
