Two-time Emmy Award winning composer, lyricist, conductor, pianist, and producer Glen Roven, has passed away at the age of 60.

The International Opera Awards are pleased to announce the finalists for this year's Awards. These were selected by an international jury chaired by John Allison, editor of Opera magazine and classical music critic with The Daily Telegraph: 'It's gratifying to see how the International Opera Awards just keep growing. With a record number of nominations to consider, and our biggest and most international jury yet, I'm delighted to say that our exciting shortlists-covering six continents and around 30 countries-reflect the truly cosmopolitan nature of the art form. Despite the challenges faced by opera companies almost everywhere, opera is vibrantly alive.'

The best new production of the Gelb era is now ten years old. And it still has the power to please.

Chinese soprano Hui He and Albanian soprano Ermonela Jaho share the title role of Puccini's Madama Butterfly at the Met. Italian conductor Jader Bignamini, who is making his company debut, leads initial performances starring He, who has performed in the opera more than 150 times, beginning November 2. The cast for Anthony Minghella's production (an instant hit when it premiered at the Met in 2006) also includes Italian tenor Roberto Aronica as Pinkerton, Serbian baritone David Bizic as Sharpless, and American mezzo-soprano Maria Zifchak reprising her interpretation of Suzuki. On November 20 and March 13, American baritone Dwayne Croft will sing Sharpless.

With its poignant melodies, memorable characters, and intriguing storyline, it's the must-see opera for newcomers a perennial favorite of aficionados. The stellar international cast features one of today's most famous interpreters of the role of Cio-Cio-San, (Butterfly), the extraordinary Chinese soprano Hui He, as well as Italian tenor Gianluca Terranova (Lt. B.F. Pinkerton); each in their Dallas Opera debuts.  Renowned Italian conductor Donato Renzetti will be at the podium in this San Francisco Opera production directed by the distinguished British stage director, John Copley.

The Metropolitan Opera's 2017-18 season will feature 220 performances of 26 works, including two Met premieres, one co-commissioned by the company and one an older masterpiece having its first Met performances; a variety of repertory favorites, three in new productions; and performances of Verdi's towering concert work for soloists, orchestra, and chorus, the Requiem. Of note, Broadway star Kelli O'Hara is set to return to the Met in Così fan tutte this season.

The new cast opens on Friday, February 27 with 5 performances remaining through Saturday, March 14. Performance dates are Feb. 27, Mar. 3, 14 at 7:30pm; and Mar. 8, 11 at 2pm.

CHICAGO – Lyric Opera of Chicago presents the fiery melodrama Tosca by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) conducted by Dmitri Jurowski in a new production by John Caird. It opens on Saturday, January 24 with 10 performances through Saturday, March 14. Performance dates are Jan. 24, 27, Feb. 2, 27, Mar. 3, 14 at 7:30pm; and Jan. 30, Feb. 5, Mar. 8, 11 at 2pm. Brian Jagde, one of the outstanding tenors of his generation with a burgeoning international career, will make his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut performing the role of the painter/revolutionary Mario Cavaradossi in Puccini's fiery melodrama Tosca tonight, Jan. 24-Feb. 5, Lyric's general director Anthony Freudannounced today. Jagde replaces the previously announced Ukrainian tenor Misha Didyk, who withdrew from the production for personal reasons.
