July is a packed month at The Nash, kicking off with a 4th of July bash with the Bad Cactus Brass Band. The month also marks the beginning of the Catch A Rising Star Series, comprised of Arizona musicians ages 18 to 24, who have been specially selected by The Nash,. The Series provides a platform for these emerging artists to gain prominence in the jazz community.
Jazz Journalists Association Honors Chicago Writer/Broadcaster Neil Tesser

Neil Tesser, a Chicago-based jazz journalist, broadcaster, author, educator, former chair of the board of trustees of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and current board member of the Jazz Journalists Association, was honored with the JJA's 2015 Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism Award on Tuesday, June 16 at a cocktail reception at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. Tesser's Award topped 2015 JJA Jazz Awards for excellence in media, winners of which were announced at the party.

Lincoln Center Out of Doors one of the country's longest-running, free, summer outdoor festivals opens its 45th season on July 22, 2015. A range of concerts, dance performances, family events, related film screenings, talks, and an exhibition will be presented across three weeks, from July 22 - August 9.

Ebony Repertory Theatre (ERT - Founder/Producer Wren T. Brown) announced today that they will present the Pulitzer Prize Finalist and Tony Award-nominated production of THE GOSPEL AT COLONUS starring Tony Award-winner Roger Robinson (Joe Turner's Come and Gone) as Oedpius. The acclaimed production, conceived and adapted by Lee Breuer (Mabou Mines' Trilogy) and music by Bob Telson (Lincoln Center Theater's Chronicle of a Death Foretold), is a soul stirring dramatic-musical which takes place within the framework of a Pentecostal church service set against the tragic Greek background of the story of Oedipus at Colonus, in which the exiled king Oedipus seeks a place where he may be properly buried. ERT's production, directed by Andi Chapman (Actors Co-op's Steel Magnolias - Drama-Logue Award for Outstanding Director), will commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Premiere. Performances will run tonight, June 18 - July 19, 2015 with an official press opening on Saturday, June 20 at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center (4718 West Washington Boulevard) in Los Angeles.

Blue Note Records Exec Bruce Lundvall Dies at 79

Bruce Lundvall, former CEO of Blue Note Records who signed artists such as Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Natalie Cole and Norah Jones, passed away today, May 19, 2015, due to complications from a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 79.
The Nash Sets Expanded Jazz Summer Workshops

Developing new jazz musicians and building on the skills of existing artists, The Nash holds annual jazz workshops each summer. From New Orleans Trad Jazz and Latin Workshops to developing vocals and bass, the roster has expanded, with workshops running through August. Instructors at The Nash are comprised of the leading jazz artists in the Valley, many from Arizona State University and the Maricopa Community Colleges. All ages and skill levels are welcome. In an unprecedented series of events worldwide on April 30 th, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz joined together to celebrate and recognize jazz as a vehicle for freedom of expression and dialogue between cultures.
