It should be no surprise that as a lover of theater, I firmly believe in the transitive power of the performing arts. Any production has the power to elicit some emotional response from the audience, but theater often does more. Studies have shown that participating in the performing arts helps students improve their performance in other academic areas. While the impact of the arts in schools is widely known, the use and impact of theater and the arts in prison systems is somewhat less talked about. Nevertheless, theater has been used by penile systems for centuries as a way to rehabilitate prisoners, and that unorthodox idea is at the core of Our Country's Good, now playing at UT-Austin. The infrequently produced Tony nominated play, written by Timberlake Wertenbaker, is a completely engrossing love letter to the virtues of theater and a thrilling depiction of a peculiar moment in Australian history.

It's finally here! After weeks of dedicated, detailed work and long, long hours, the efforts of all of our very talented company members have come together to create nothing short of a magical final product. Tennessee Rep's The Importance of Being Earnest has officially opened to stellar reviews and raving audiences and those who joined us before the show on opening night were given a little something extra to rave about. Our traditional opening night event, First Night Supper Club, was transformed for The Importance of Being Earnest into First Night Backstage. The set is on the biggest revolve sets Tennessee Rep has ever used and to accommodate it the stage and seating bank orientation of Johnson Theater was flipped 180 degrees from the normal orientation Tennessee Rep uses for our productions. This flip created a bigger more accessible backstage area than we normally have which afforded us the ability to offer a unique opportunity.

The Dock Street Theatre is a stunning jewel box set in the heart of downtown Charleston. Built on the site of a colonial era theatre, it is the home of Charleston Stage and its professional resident acting company made up primarily of young and energetic recent college graduates. Now in its 36th season, the company produces a full season of (mostly) family-friendly plays with a hefty dose of musical comedies.
As its season opener, Charleston Stage mounted a spirited but uneven production of 9 TO 5: THE MUSICAL.

What do you get when you mix an iconic book and film series featuring a magical boy-hero with two shamelessly goofy stand-up comedians, a well-heeled crowd and a host of antsy kids? You get roughly an hour and a half of mayhem featuring silly string, super-soakers, beach balls and cheap stuffed animals (some with removable heads-ouch). What on earth this has to do with J. K. Rowling's famous franchise is anyone's guess, but it's as good an excuse as any to get silly.

One of the most fun and entertaining aspects of the summer is the big, splashy musicals that get produced all over the nation. Last night, I was invited to attend the final dress rehearsal of Fort Bend Theatre's SHREK THE MUSICAL. The company is bidding a fond farewell to summer with a gargantuan production that is bond to entertain any who venture out to see it. This musical, featuring a Book and Lyrics by acclaimed playwright David Lindsay-Abaire and Music by Jeanine Tesori is based on the 2001 DreamWorks film SHREK and the 1991 William Steig book SHREK!. SHREK THE MUSICAL got mixed to positive reviews when it opened on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre. It earned eight 2009 Tony Award nominations and won for Best Costumes. All in all, the show enjoyed a successful 12-month run. After its Broadway run, the creative team has tinkered with the show for its notable First National Tour and London productions. The current licensed version most closely resembles the London production of the show.
