Plays and musicals have, since the very beginning, found ways to get us to face important issues and problems in new and surprising ways. Musicals, esepcailly, can be unexpected in how they bring together a story that, in the end, is wonderfully relatable, human and filled with emotional and important moments, even though it's wrapped in such an unusual package. The Broadway smash hit musical Kinky Boots succeeds exceptionally well at doing just that, creating a big, bright fun musical entertainment that also delivers a timely and important message in a believable way.

Based on the 2005 British independent film of the same name which was inspired by a true story, this musical tells the story of Charlie Price, who inherits a shoe factory from his father. To save the business, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen, Lola. With Lola's help, Charlie develops a plan to produce a line of high-heeled boots. In the process, he and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.

Kinky Boots is an exciting evening full of humor and heart. Despite the racy title and drag stars, the show is remarkably family-friendly, rarely straying from PG/PG-13 themes. With equal parts guts and glitter, this extravaganza is sure to please the whole crowd!

Last night Nashville was doused with glitter and love as Kinky Boots, the Tony Award winning musical, opened at Tennessee Performing Arts Center. With a book by Harvey Fierstein and music & lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, it is easy to see why Kinky Boots swept the Tony Awards in 2013.

First-time Broadway composer Cyndi Lauper, who first conquered the music charts back in the 1980s, recently sat down to talk about her Kinky Boots experience and to share the show's impact on her own life - which provided much of her inspiration as she approached the project.

When it comes to film-to-stage adaptations, the sassy, Tony Award-winning Best Musical KINKY BOOTS---whose touring company is now on stage at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through January 11---is that rare phenomenon we all wish would happen more often: a stage show that actually improves upon its cinematic source material. Along with the added bonus of Jerry Mitchell's fiery choreography balanced within his even-paced direction, the stage adaptation very much deserves every accolade it has received and continues to enjoy. KINKY BOOTS is, no question, one feel-good, winner of a show.
