BWW Reviews: KILLER JOE at SeeNoSun OnStage is a Knockout

Pulitzer Prize winning author Tracy Letts loves the idea of a dysfunctional family. In his most famous work, August: Osage County, Letts gives us a glimpse into the well-to-do Weston family as they cope with pain and sorrow. In his first produced play, Killer Joe, Letts shows us the pain and sorrow caused by a down-on-their-luck family in Texas. The rarely produced play (and rarely seen 2011 movie) is dark and gritty both in context and character. The dysfunctional family at the 'heart' of the story centers around Ansel and Sharla, his hot young second wife; his two children: Chris, who is in constant trouble, and the slow Dottie; and the title character - a Dallas detective who moonlights as a hitman.

SeeNoSun Presents KILLER JOE, Now thru 6/29

Killer Joe is the first play written by the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning author of August: Osage County, Tracy Letts. The play is a southern gothic black comedy that derives humor from the dirty realism of stereotypical white trash characters that are not only victims of circumstance, but also victims of themselves, enslaved to their own malice and delusions. In this withering rustic outlook on the disenfranchised in America, the Smith family hires Killer Joe to do away with mother for the insurance money. Killer Joe decides to bed the Smith's young virgin daughter, Dottie, as sexual collateral against his final fee until the insurance policy is paid. Before it's over nearly everyone is a bloody mess.
