After pulling off the most difficult feat of appealing to both diehard Monty Python fans and newcomers to the British humorists, Monty Pythons Spamalot enjoyed a healthy and audience-pleasing run on The Great White Way before closing earlier this year. The touring version of the show is not dead yet, however, and arrived last night at Cleveland's Palace Theatre for an eight-show engagement.

Commissioned by SCR, You, Nero imagines a meeting during the declining years of the Roman Empire between Scribonius, a put-upon playwright, and Emperor Nero, the all-powerful, narcissistic arbiter of art. The Roman romp stars Danny Scheie as Nero and John Vickery as Scribonius. Produced in association with Berkeley Repertory Theatre and directed by Sharon Ott,You, Nero will run from Jan. 4 through Jan. 25, 2009 on the Julianne Argyros Stage. Low-priced previews are available from Jan. 4 through Jan. 8. Opening night is Jan. 9. There's a great pleasure in talking to veteran performers. They've been through it all and have many great stories to tell. Such was the case recently in a conversation with dancer/ singer/ actress/comedienne Mitzi Gaynor. This great lady starred in such Hollywood successes as THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS with Ethel Merman, THE JOKER IS WILD with Frank Sinatra, the re-make of ANYTHING GOES with Bing Cosby and Donald O'Connor, LES GIRLS with Gene Kelly and SOUTH PACIFIC with Rossano Brazzi. She also wowed television audiences in the 60's and 70's with a series of specials that captivated America and had schoolboys rushing home from sporting events to watch them. Without a doubt, Mitzi Gaynor was a show business phenomenon and she remains one today as she prepares for the public television airing of her new documentary called 'Mitzi Gaynor: Razzle Dazzle! The Special Years.'
Paul Leschen and Fred Sauter's new musical about a futuristic plague of mutant hair metal bedbugs is a hilarious romp with some kickass tunes. Currently part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF).
Toby's original version of Phantom of the Opera, written by local artists, plays at the Baltimore location through November 16.
Nick Spangler currently starring as Matt in the Off Broadway revival of The Fantasticks, will be a contestant on the latest edition of The Amazing Race. Spangler will compete against the other 'Amazing Racers' with his sister and teammate, Starr Spangler, a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. Starting at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the 13th season of the Emmy-winning reality competition will follow the teams as they travel over 30,000 miles in 23 days to countries such as Brazil, Bolivia, Russia, India and Kazakhstan.
The classic American musical West Side Story plays at Toby's Baltimore location through August 24.
Martin's intriguing exploration of two great minds meeting remains, however, lowbrow humor that begins to wear thin, especially so during a time traveling Elvis character (Cyrus Alexander) plunking into the bar to further play up the contrasts of creativity. There is enough to laugh about in Picasso at the Lapin Agile to keep audiences pleased, and thanks to Martin, also slightly engaged in the argument...
