BWW Reviews: Shakespeare Festival St. Louis' ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA
by Chris Gibson
- May 28, 2015
One of the joys of late Spring is taking in the latest offering by Shakespeare Festival St. Louis each year in Forest Park. There's just something truly special about sitting under the stars and watching the immortal bard's words come to life on stage. This year the play of choice is the tragedy ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, which has the distinction of having more scenes than any other play he penned. It's also chock full of wonderful, poetic language, takes place in an exotic location (ancient Egypt), and makes a convincing argument for staying out of the affairs of the Middle East. This production is distinguished by some particularly excellent performances, as well as some wonderful stagecraft, but it may be a bit too verbose, and lacking in action, for its own good.

BWW Reviews: Mustard Seed Theatre's Moving Revival of ALL IS CALM
by Chris Gibson
- Nov 20, 2014
Mustard Seed Theatre has brought back their popular staging of ALL IS CALM - THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914, which premiered around this time last year, and it's definitely a piece of theatre that demands your time and attention. Somehow I must have missed mentioning this the first time around, but this was originally a broadcast that occurred on Minnesota Public Radio. Artistic director/director Deanna Jent took that raw material and molded it into a moving and compelling stage production that won deserved accolades and awards for its excellence. If you didn't catch it last year, then you need to make sure you do so during its current run, and even if you did see it, I can promise you that it's certainly worth seeing again.

BWW Reviews: Mustard Seed Theatre's Amazing Production of ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914
by Chris Gibson
- Nov 14, 2013
ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914 is a smartly conceived acapella musical by Peter Rothstein that chronicles the stunning events that occurred on Christmas Day 1914. It mixes short narrative bursts with 23 songs from the period, and it's never dull or contrived. For me, the hearty vocals produced by the cast are a sheer delight to listen to. Mustard Seed Theatre has put together a wonderful production that's a real treat for the upcoming holidays.

BWW Reviews: New Jewish Theatre Stages Dramatic LOST IN YONKERS
by Chris Gibson
- Oct 13, 2012
Though cut from some of the same cloth as his "Eugene" trilogy, LOST IN YONKERS is a different animal all together from playwright Neil Simon. There are laughs to be found for sure, but the overwhelming sense that pervades this particular work is that of the dramatic. There are similarities as well, what with this being a coming-of-age tale, too. But, Simon works these characters differently, even confessing in one of his memoirs that he isn't sure where they all came from. The current presentation by The New Jewish Theatre is a thoughtful and nicely performed rendering.
BWW Reviews: The Muny's Lively Production of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
by Chris Gibson
- Jul 26, 2012
If you like your JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT's straight up (no chaser), then the current production playing The Muny may not be your cup of tea. But, if you like it when they give the show a St. Louis twist, then this is your type of musical. I've seen enough productions of this particular show to want something a little different myself, so I was completely charmed by the Muny's take of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's work.
