The third annual Hollywood Fringe Festival, Hollywood's fearless celebration of the emerging arts is back June 13 - 30, 2013, and over the next couple of weeks I'll be featuring some of the musical productions hoping to entice audiences to see their latest work. First up are Michael Shaw Fisher and Exorcistic: The Rock Musical Parody Experiment, and Andrew Potter's The Road to High Street.
This Saturday evening,artist Kyle August Lind makes his return to Los Angeles with an exhibition of meticulous 'process' pieces created over the last 50 years. A prominent figure of LA's legendary 1960s Freak scene, Lind's elaborate and intricately detailed works reveal a deep-rooted spirituality and are imbued with the energy and liberation of the hippie movement. The works will be shown at PYO Gallery LA in downtown Los Angeles through April 20th.

The Society of Composers (SCI) National Conference will be held at Ohio State February 13-16, under the auspices of the School of Music's Contemporary Music Festival. The festival will feature 100 new works of music in 12 concerts over the three and a half days, many of which are world premieres. The festival also will welcome guest composers, performers, and scholars from all over the United States, panel sessions on new music, and performances by Ohio State faculty and students.

Today, Dec. 29th, at the Park West, 322 W. Armitage, Chicago, just days after Frank Zappa's 72nd birthday, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO) presents an adventurous tribute to this great American musical genius. The show, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will feature the 15-piece CJO along with saxophonist Ernie Watts, who was in Zappa's band for the original recording of The Grand Wazoo. Electric violinist Mark Wood (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and electric bassist Dave Morgan, who created the arrangements for this show, are also featured. Conducting the performance will be CJO artistic director Jeff Lindberg.

Released on this year's anniversary of FZ's death (December 4), FRANK ZAPPA PLAYS THE MUSIC OF FRANK ZAPPA--A MEMORIAL TRIBUTE features the classic recordings of "Watermelon In Easter Hay," "Black Napkins" and "Zoot Allures," as well as the earliest versions from the Vault at the time of the original CD release in 1996 (still available from Barfko-Swill). It was one final wish of the Composer that these not be performed by anyone else; Dweezil Zappa is the sole exception with respect to the latter two works.
