The Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have announced Corey Mitchell, Theater Arts Teacher at the Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, N.C., as the winner of the inaugural Excellence in Theatre Education Award. This year's finalists were Marianne Adams, Director of Education at the Grandstreet Theatre School in Helena, Mont., and Donald Hicken, Theatre Department Director at the Baltimore School for the Arts in Baltimore, Md.
Directed by Robin Fowler, Rhinoceros is a play that from its inception has challenged the status quo. One of the major influences of absurdist theatre, Ionesco's play still resonates with its themes of blind conformity, totalitarianism, metamorphosis, love, despair, and death. The illogical comedy of Rhinoceros hits on many touchstones of the human experience, feeling both familiar and incredibly alien at the same time.
Theater is often at its best when it is unconventional. Surprising. Innovative. While there is certainly merit in sticking to the old-fashioned and traditional ways of doing things, there's also great value in doing something new and outside-the-box. The success of doing so depends on many things, from the technical aspects of a production to the ability of the actors to create and tell the story in ways the audience can relate to, even in unfamiliar trappings. So far in the short lifespan of OUT LOUD Theatre, the company has excelled in doing just that, masterful storytelling that is delivered in creative and exciting ways.
New Hampshire Theatre Project's Youth Repertory Company will present Eugene Ionesco's absurdist classic, Rhinoceros, on May 15-24. One day, the residents of a small provincial French town begin to experience unsettling brushes with a rampaging rhinoceros. While others find these attacks shocking and problematic, the simplistic, kind-hearted protagonist Berenger is seemingly disinterested. Events begin to take a strange turn as Berenger's friends, co-workers, and his romantic interest become tangled in this web of "rhinocerotic" intrigue and he is forced to choose sides.

Known as an existential comedy, PICASSO AT LAPIN AGILE is Steve Martin's tongue-and-cheek poke at the deep philosophical pieces penned by French playwrights like Jean Paul Sartre or Eugene Ionesco. In this Victor Hugo a go-go knee-slapper, Martin creates an alternative universe where famed theoretical physicist Albert Einstein and famed theoretical romantic and painter Pablo Picasso meet at the Parisian bar Lapin Agile and wax philosophies, ponder existence, and, with help of a time-traveling 'country boy', brave the new 20th century world and the future beyond.
