BWW Review: New England Premiere of Annie Baker's THE FLICK at Company One Theatre

Annie Baker takes live theater to the movies in THE FLICK, set in a rundown, second-run Worcester movie house. The audience gets to be like a fly on the wall as the ushers sweep up the detritus and muddle through their existential struggles between shows. Not much happens, but everything changes over the course of three hours.

Enjoy a Fresh Look at Beckett's HAPPY DAYS at the Mead Theater

Cultural DC's production of Samuel Beckett's Happy Days offers audiences a fresh look at a play that has become a legend in theatre circles, not least because of its unprecedented demands on the actress who has to perform the lead role. How refreshing it is, then, to see Karen Lange's resilience in the role; she understands that Winnie's quest for survival is what gets her up every morning like clockwork, and drives her with only an occasional glimmer in her eyes of the panic that most of us would feel.

BWW Reviews: New England Premiere of IMAGINING MADOFF at New Rep

Convicted swindler Bernard Madoff squares off with a fictional victim of his Ponzi scheme in Deborah Margolin's controversial play in New Rep's Black Box Theater. Under the direction of Elaine Vaan Hogue, on Jon Savage's stunning set, Jeremiah Kissel, Joel Colodner, and Adrianne Krstansky tell this powerful human story that explores why Madoff did what he did and how he got away with it.

BWW Reviews: Throwback Time in Company One's HOW WE GOT ON

Following fifteen-year-old Hank, the show addresses the growth of rap and hip hop in the 1980s, particularly in a suburban environment where it had not yet been accepted. Hank and his friends, Julian and Luann, struggle with stage fright, competition, unsupportive parental figures, friendship, acceptance and identity throughout the piece, all of which is masterfully DJed by the Selector, a current day disk jockey who narrates and soundtracks the entire show.

BWW Review: BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK at Lyric Stage Company

A play about a wannabe movie star features a magical blending of live performance with cinematic images in the New England premiere of 2011 Off-Broadway hit BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK. Summer L. Williams makes her Lyric Stage directing debut with Kami Rushell Smith shining at the forefront of a strong ensemble cast, most of whom play dual roles. Film and Media Designer Johnathan Carr puts his stamp on the production.

BWW Review: HOLIDAY MEMORIES to Warm a Winter's Night

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, with all of its blaring music and colorful lights clamoring for attention, New Repertory Theatre is offering a quiet and simple drama as a balm for our overloaded synapses. HOLIDAY MEMORIES combines two short stories by Truman Capote that are based on his childhood in rural Alabama in the middle of the Depression. If you only know him from IN COLD BLOOD, you will be pleasantly surprised by Capote's exquisite language and the warmth that radiates from these stories.

BWW Review: Boston Premiere of BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO

Are we at a sufficient remove from the last decade of wars in the Middle East to be able to step back and take an analytical view that is balanced or unbiased? In BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO, Rajiv Joseph's 2010 Pulitzer Prize Finalist play having its Boston premiere at Company One, the playwright addresses this challenge by asking a lot of questions without professing to know the answers. He leaves it to each member of the audience to draw their own conclusions.
