The Frick Presents From Manion To Museum 6/22-9/5

With Henry Clay Frick's death in 1919, his will was made public and the destiny of his collection and mansion as a museum was formalized, but not yet set into motion. After the death of his wife, Adelaide, in 1931, the Board of Trustees established by Mr. Frick's will became engaged in discussions about how to create a museum from this legacy.

Sheldon Gallery Features Legends of St. Louis Blues Exhibit Through 8/28

Organized by the Sheldon Art Galleries, the exhibition Legends of St. Louis Blues Music tells the story of the rich history of blues music in St. Louis through biographies on key musicians, illustrations by Kevin Belford, photographs by Jennifer Silverberg, Charley Taylor, Bob Shelli and Photo Joe, ephemera, recordings and memorabilia such as Johnnie Johnson's electric piano, among other rarities. Building on its key role in ragtime music, St. Louis was a gathering place for early blues musicians like Roosevelt Sykes, Peetie Wheatstraw, Henry Townsend, and Victoria Spivey, among other luminaries. This exhibition uncovers important St. Louis musicians, songs and blues music styles that have influenced our musical heritage, including jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, rock and roll, and a continually evolving blues tradition.

Sheldon Gallery to Exhibit Works Wallace Herndon Smith 6/4 - 8/21

The exhibition features paintings by St. Louis artist Wallace Herndon Smith. Born in St. Louis in 1901, Wallace Smith was a traditional painter who absorbed the visual language of artists like Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, and Edward Hopper. Smith was fluent in many subjects including still-lifes, landscapes, interiors, and portraits. The artist's strength was in capturing psychological nuances, and the exhibit has been selected to illuminate this area of his work.

Ms. Brown's new ensemble and Ms. Miller's company Gallim Dance share the first program. The second program features the Kate Weare Company and Monica Bill Barnes & Company. On Saturday, August 14 at 2pm, all four choreographers will present a family-friendly program featuring excerpts of works in the regular programs. Brooklyn Museum Presents Adult Public Programs in July and August

During July and August the Brooklyn Museum will present an array of public programs for adults including a jazz tribute to hip-hop artist Keith 'Guru' Elam, a panel discussion about the life of Andy Warhol featuring artist-socialite Brigid Berlin and filmmaker Vincent Fremont, two curator talks about the exhibition American High Style: Fashioning a National Collection, and a Dr. Sketchy's live drawing class featuring cabaret performers as models.

France is Focus of August Issue of 'Opera News'

In its upcoming August issue, Opera News celebrates the glorious music and musicians of France.The cover story investigates new music director Philippe Jordan's plans for the Paris Opera, while additional features profile two great French opera composers, Meyerbeer and Massenet; the adventurous repertoire choices of coloratura soprano Patricia Petibon; and the controversial views of French composer/conductor/author Frédéric Chaslin.
