Tooting Arts Club to Present Site-Specific Production of SWEENEY TODD, March 12
by Matt Smith
- Feb 11, 2015
Tooting Arts Club's acclaimed production of Sweeney Todd is to move to a new home on Shaftesbury Avenue this spring whilst Harrington's Pie and Mash Shop undergoes refurbishment. The pop-up pie shop success story started last October when Tooting Arts offered up lovelorn Mrs Lovett's infamous pies in a grisly, site-specific production of Stephen Sondheim's most famous musical in SW17. Audiences met in the local barbers before being led into London's oldest, functioning pie-shop, established in 1908 and complete with original Victorian decor.

BWW Review: The ANNIE Remake is Bad, but Not
Nearly as Bad as You Think
by Matt Tamanini
- Dec 15, 2014
Full disclosure, I was completely ready to despise everything about the remake of ANNIE starring Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis. In fact, I had already written the lede in my head, and let me tell you, it was scathing. But, then I saw the movie, and was pleasantly surprised by how not completely horrible it was. Yes, it will probably still rank as one of the worst big screen musical adaptations of the past decade; just above the disastrous NINE; but there was plenty to appreciate for musical theatre lovers young and old.

- Mar 31, 2014
On April 12, 2014, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, one of the most produced playwrights in the English language, celebrates his 75th birthday. To mark the event, some of his most loyal New Jersey-based theater artists are presenting AYCKBOURN AT 75: A THEATICAL BIRTHDAY PARTY. The show will trace his remarkable life and career featuring excerpts from such plays as THE NORMAN CONQUESTS, ABSURD PERSON SINGULAR and BEDROOM FARCE as well as songs from BY JEEVES, a collaboration between Ayckbourn and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. With special permission from Sir Alan, the show will also feature a scene from Ayckbourn's very first play, THE SQUARE CAT, which is unpublished and unavailable for performance. The 1959 comedy has never been seen in the USA and hasn't been performed in more than 50 years. The entire evening is written and directed by Michael T. Mooney, who studied theatre-in-the-round with Ayckbourn at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, England. Mooney has directed ten of the author's plays in the Garden State, including four American premieres.
