The National Touring Production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, breathes new life into the venerable hills and introduces a star-in-the-making. Vivacious and talented Kerstin Anderson captivates us from the opening strains of the title song, and her passion and energy propel the show forward. More than five decades after its Broadway premiere, the powerful message of the story and the superb Rodgers and Hammerstein score still resonate.

BWW Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC Is Sweet But Not Saccharine
by Natalie de la Garza
- Feb 22, 2016
THE SOUND OF MUSIC, directed by Jack O'Brien, finds the perfect balance for Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic story, a story that can be sickeningly saccharine in the wrong hands and therefore easily dismissed. O'Brien's vision is a bit more weighty and grounded and complemented brilliantly by the performances and work of Scenic Designer Douglas W. Schmidt and Lighting Designer Natasha Katz.

BWW Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC Blends Realism, Romanticism at Dr. Phillips Center
by Matt Tamanini
- Jan 6, 2016
There is something both familiar and jarring about the brand new North American tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, running at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts through Sunday, January 10th. While the beloved musical about a nun turned governess still has all of the iconic songs by Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics), including 'My Favorite Things,' 'Do-Re-Mi (complete with solfege hand signs),' and the title song, this production focuses more intently on the real-world danger that the Trapp family faced leading up to the outbreak of World War II.

BWW Review: Vibrant New SOUND OF MUSIC Opens at the Ahmanson
by Don Grigware
- Oct 1, 2015
Perhaps the best known musical of all time Rodgers' and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music has remained a family favorite since the 50s. Number one, the score is to die for; secondly, the book is dramatically fulfilling with a real life family being torn asunder by the ravages of fascism. Touches of real intertwined humor add to the appeal. Under the skillful eye and wisdom of director Jack O'Brien, the new North American touring production is now at the Ahmanson through October and proves thoroughly winning. I wouldn't say there's a totally fresh perspective, but somehow touches of real humanity and love stand out, and the entire ensemble is perfectly cast.
