On Friday, February 17, 2017, 24 of the best young American and Canadian opera singers will perform with pianist Craig Rutenberg before a panel of judges and an enthusiastic audience at The Morgan Library & Museum, hoping to win a George London Award, an honor that has been conferred upon hundreds of the best young singers since 1971.
Led by CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov and featuring guest clarinetist David Krakauer, this intriguing, genre-bending program celebrates the origins and influences of klezmer music, the lively and soulful dance tunes played by Jewish folk musicians as they traveled throughout eastern Europe during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Program selections range from folk-flavored classical pieces by Liszt and Johann Strauss to recent works with similarly mixed roots.

Berkeley Symphony announced today that Music Director Joana Carneiro has withdrawn from the Berkeley Symphony concert on Thursday, January 26 at 8 pm at Zellerbach Hall. Carneiro is pregnant and is under doctor's advice not to conduct or travel. The concert will be conducted by Christian Reif. The Orchestra will perform the Bay Area premiere of Mason Bates' Cello Concerto with Joshua Roman, to whom the work is dedicated, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 4.

Cantatas were the daily work of the master composer. A selection of Bach's most uplifting cantatas will be sung by the acclaimed American Classical Orchestra Chorus with selected soloists in the ideal acoustic hall of St. Ignatius of Antioch Church. The Variation String Trio, comprising violinist Jennifer Koh, violist Hsin-Yun Huang, and cellist Wilhelmina Smith, makes its New York City debut performing works by living composers including Kaija Saariaho's Cloud Trio, selections from Gyorgy Kurtag's Signs, Games and Messages, and Andrew Norman's The Companion Guide to Rome. Violinists Judson Griffin, Lisa Rautenberg, Cynthia Roberts and Jorg-Michael Schwarz will perform on 1610 and 1615 Giovanni Maginni and 1668 and 1671 Jacob Stainer masterpiece violins. Also featured on the program are Handel's Concerto Grosso Opus 3, No. 2, Geminiani's "La Follia' Concerto and Albicastro's Concerto a Quattro Opus 7 excerpts. This concert will be conducted by Thomas Crawford. Maestro Thomas Crawford will present a Pre-Concert Lecture at 7:00PM on October 25.
