Anita Darian, a soprano whose four-octave voice earned her the nickname “The Armenian Yma Sumac” and spawned an eclectic 50-year career that ranged from performances with the New York City Opera, Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic to big-band jazz concerts, co-starring roles with Barbara Cook, and hit pop recordings that included “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is dead at 87. A longtime resident of East Atlantic Beach, L.I., she died Sunday, Feb. 1 at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside of complications from surgery.

The Institute of Outdoor Theatre has announced the publication of Outdoor Theatre Facilities: A Guide to Planning and Building Outdoor Theatres. From the initial concept to opening night, the book covers all aspects of planning, equipping, designing and constructing outdoor performance facilities. In addition to the text, its 137 pages include a graphically rich selection of architectural drawings and photographs of outstanding outdoor theatres around the world. Written by a team of six specialists in architecture, landscape architecture, and theatre design, production and management, the book is available through the Drama Book Shop in New York, William Stout Architectural Books and the Institute's website.

Directed by BNT Ensemble Member Spenser Davis, From White Plains will run in the Downstairs Studio at the Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 North Lincoln Ave., tonight, January 24th - February 23rd.

Raven Theatre's new play development series, called [Working Title], will present a fully staged workshop production of Floating, by New York-based playwright Eric Lane, Monday, November 4 through Wednesday, November 6, 2013. Floating was named finalist at PlayPenn's New Play Conference, Multi-Stages New Works Contest and Berkshire Playwrights Lab. Curtain times for all three performances will be 7:30 pm.
