BWW Review: In New Don't Tell Mama Show, Lennie Watts' SHAMELESS Auditioning For Musical Theater Roles Is Solid But Doesn't Completely Score

Monday night was the third performance of a four-show Don't Tell Mama run of Watts' new show Shameless (the next one is on 10/19), directed by Richard Sabellico, who hired Watts for his first theater role after seeing him perform in cabaret. How, I wondered, would Lennie Watts follow his ballsy, 2013 MAC award-winning show, Bloody Bloody Lennie Watts!? Apparently by offering another rambunctious, personal evening, this one straddling the worlds of cabaret and theater. Self-described as "the most shameless, self aggrandizing show cabaret has ever seen" (a moot point) and "an extended audition" (not moot), the piece is custom tailored and beautifully put together, but ultimately achieves mixed results.

BWW Review: THE BOOK OF LIZ Delivers a Bifocal Satire of the Heartland

With authentic Midwest flavoring, Amy and David Sedaris, lightly satirize ascetic religious communities like the Amish and the Amanas. Then as their heroine breaks free and explores the outside world, we watch how zany and insular the people are on our side of the fence, viewed through the lens of Liz's inner purity. Directed by Glynnis O'Donoghue for Donna Scott Productions, the nuttiness of this cheese ball comedy keeps us from taking the satire too seriously.

BWW Reviews: Satiric, Sardonic SEDARIS at Wolf Trap

Today, Sedaris' work isn't just published in the New Yorker, not just in book form, he is now in huge demand as a reader. Who could have imagined that a snarky, off-beat short story writer could generate such a huge following? And with such a sarcastic, nasal baritone? And yet here he stood at Wolf Trap Farm Park's main stage the other night, surrounded by adoring fans, his old-tech file folder and sheafs of paper in hand. We loved it.
