As PlayhouseSquare readies for its 2010-2011 season, East 14th Street is poised to welcome new life and activity to the downtown neighborhood.
New Village Arts, Carlsbad's award-winning, professional theatre is very proud to announce its Tenth Season. This will be NVA's biggest season ever, with eight full productions, NVA's first musical and two local premieres. Over the past nine seasons, NVA has established itself as one of the most important mid-sized theatres in San Diego, producing over 40 highly acclaimed productions, including a world-premiere holiday show, multiple regional and local premieres, unforgettable American and world classics, the intense work of Sam Shepard and the popular FREE Shakespeare in the Park. New Village Arts honors that history in Season 10 and introduces some exciting new traditions for North County, by selecting shows that honor the history of the company, recognize the amazing current growth and give an intriguing glimpse into the future. All of the plays take us on an adventure - into growing up, learning about love and loss and celebrating the power of the human soul.
Even as its shows reach New York and London, Berkeley Repertory Theatre begins another season of fearless theatre here at home: Emmy- and Tony Award-winning actor Mandy Patinkin stars in the world-premiere production of Compulsion on Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage. Acclaimed director Oskar Eustis returns to the Bay Area with Rinne Groff's latest play, a kaleidoscopic collision of history and culture that combines stellar acting with marvelous marionettes. Compulsion, a world-premiere co-production from Berkeley Rep, The Public Theater, and Yale Repertory Theatre, begins previews on September 13, opens September 16, and closes October 31.

The Alley Theatre was founded over sixty years ago as Houston's theatre company. Today, the Tony Award-winning Berkeley Repertory Theatre added another incendiary performer to Fireworks, a new festival of colorful and explosive performances that takes off this summer. NVA's Ninth Season concludes with Tennessee Williams's American classic SUMMER AND SMOKE, directed by NVA Executive Artistic Director Kristianne Kurner. SUMMER AND SMOKE features Williams's most complex female character in Alma Winemiller, the minister's daughter caught up in a romantic relationship with the hedonistic doctor next door.
