South Coast Repertory's 49th season will offer audiences an exciting blend of current hits and world premieres. The season begins with Alan Ayckbourn's hilarious farce, Absurd Person Singular, and will include new plays by some of the hottest writers on the theatre scene, including the world premiere of Noah Haidle's Smokefall and a second world premiere to be announced; Sarah Ruhl's comic tale of loss, Eurydice; the Southland debuts of Bill Cain's touching How to Write a New Book for the Bible, Amanda Dehnert's trailblazing musical take on Shakespeare, The Verona Project, and David Henry Hwang's hit comedy Chinglish; and the West Coast premieres of Samuel D. Hunter's poignantly funny The Whale and Stephen Adly Guirgis' Broadway hit The Motherf**ker with the Hat.

East West Players (EWP), the nation's largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work and the longest-running professional theatre of color in the country, concludes its 46th Anniversary season, themed Languages of Love, with Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, directed by Tim Dang and choreographed by Reggie Lee.

SMASH's Brian d'Arcy James (SHREK, NEXT TO NORMAL) and Jennifer Lim (CHINGLISH) recently participated in a staged reading of the Broadway play CHINGLISH at The Greene Space. This particular evening also featured a conversation with Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director of the Public Theater in NYC and readings by David Henry Hwang and additional readers Francis Jue and BD Wong. On Monday, May 14, the Broadway at Birdland concert series was thrilled to present Telly Leung, one of the stars of Godspell, in 'Playlist.' The show, directed by Alan Muraoka with musical direction by Gary Adler, celebrated Telly's own playlist of favorite songs that have inspired him through the years. The band included Michael Croiter on drums and Mary Ann McSweeney on bass.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG) today announced the publication of Chinglish, a new comedy by two-time Pulitzer finalist David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly, Yellow Face).

The Herb Alpert Foundation and California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) have awarded the 18th annual Alpert Award in the Arts to five exceptional mid-career artists. The award, a prize of $75,000, recognizes past performance and future promise to artists working in Dance, Film/Video, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts.

American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) Conservatory Director Melissa Smith announced today that honorary master of fine arts degrees will be conferred on acclaimed actress and comedian Mary Birdsong and California Shakespeare Theater Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone.

Today in 2006, Tarzan opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, where it ran for 486 performances. Tarzan: The Musical is based on the Disney film of the same name and the story by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The songs are written by Phil Collins and David Zippel, with a book by David Henry Hwang. The production was nominated for a Tony award for Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Natasha Katz). The cast Featured Josh Strickland, Jennifer Gambatese, Shuler Hensley, Merle Dandridge and Chester Gregory.

Nominations for The 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced on Friday, April 27, 2012 at Feinstein's at Loews Regency by Drama Desk Award winners Brian d'Arcy James and Donna Murphy, with Death Takes a Holiday, Follies and Nice Work If You Can Get It leading the pack. Two-time Golden Globe® winner, Academy Award® & Tony Award® nominee Kathleen Turner returns to Toronto in the National Tour of Matthew Lombardo's play HIGH, tonight, May 8 through May 13, 2012, at The Royal Alexandra Theatre.
