California Shakespeare Theater's Annual Gala Raises Over $530,000

Surrounded by friends, family, and colleagues from the East Bay, San Francisco and Marin, California Shakespeare Theater's Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone was truly the man of the hour at La Dolce Vita, Cal Shakes' 15th annual gala on Saturday, March 20, 2010. The event, honorarily co-chaired by Ann and Gordon Getty and Barclay and Sharon Simpson, celebrated 10 years of Moscone's artistic leadership of the company, with the proceeds raised going to Cal Shakes' work on stage, in classrooms and throughout communities.

This year's Critics Circle Awards, sponsored by Actor's Equity Association, today announced is nominees for excellence in San Francisco Bay area theater. Berkeley Rep's production of American Idiot, which played in the fall of 2009, leads with 12 nominations and will open on Broadway this spring.

A Midsummer Night's Dream opens Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the Bruns Amphitheater after starting previews September 16. California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) ends its 35th anniversary season with a thoroughly magical production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Aaron Posner, in his company debut. One of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies, this marks the first coproduction between Cal Shakes and Two River Theater Company in New Jersey, where Posner serves as Artistic Director. The production will run through October 11, and then move to New Jersey for a limited run.

Now, after a 12-year absence, she returns with a gripping production of Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic Crime and Punishment. The scene of this Crime is Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage, where Ott earned her reputation as a dazzling director. The show begins previews on February 27, opens March 4, and closes March 29. Its executive producers are John and Helen Meyer and Richard H. Rubin and H. Marcia Smolens, with production sponsorship from the Bernard Osher Foundation. BART and Wells Fargo are the season sponsors for Berkeley Rep's 41st year of fearless theatre.

The Roman romp stars Danny Scheie as Nero and John Vickery as Scribonius. Produced in association with Berkeley Repertory Theatre and directed by Sharon Ott,You, Nero will run from Jan. 4 through Jan. 25, 2009 on the Julianne Argyros Stage. Low-priced previews are available from Jan. 4 through Jan. 8. Opening night is Jan. 9.
