For Frieze Masters: Spotlight 2013, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, Galerie Lelong presents American artist Nancy Spero's fiercely provocative War Series (1966-1970). The War Series, works in gouache and ink on paper, was originally inspired by Spero's outrage at world political events of the 1960s, more specifically the Vietnam War, but their imagery transcends these specific events and expresses a universal horror in response to oppression and war. Spero leveled the claim that the cost to humanity was the same no matter what war or era.

In his updated book, 'Radioactive Clouds of Death Over Utah: Downwinders' Fallout Cancer Epidemic Updated' (published by Trafford Publishing), author Daniel W. Miles follows up on the short and long-term health conditions of downwinders - those living below the toxic clouds -and unveils the harm still being done to these people.

As a ballet, THE MERRY WIDOW is an adaptation of Franz Lehar's popular romantic operetta Die Lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow), which premiered in 1905. In the process of adapting the score for ballet, John Lanchbery and Alan Abott retained the style of Franz Lehar's orchestrations and included several of the well-known tunes from the operetta. Their score premiered in 1975 when The Australian Ballet, under the Musical Direction of John Lanchbery, produced the World Premiere production with choreography by Ronald Hynd and Scenario and Staging by Sir Robert Helpmann. This grandiose and radiant ballet of THE MERRY WIDOW had its Houston Ballet Premiere on September 17, 1995 in the Brown Theater. The Houston Ballet also performed it in 1999 and 2007. Now, in 2013, the lavish production is serving as Mireille Hassenboehler's gorgeous swan song and letter of admiration to the audiences of the Houston Ballet.

Author Sharon Shier shares an inspired experience of harvesting maple syrup in winter at a friend's farm. Her amazing new picture novel for young adults, 'The Wisdom of the Trees', is really two sides of a coin in its intent. Since Sharon Shier is an avid maple syrup lover and had been curious about the actual process of taking it from the trees, she was thrilled to join in the fun and learn about the harvesting process too. Her experience with the trees during this tapping was so mind-boggling to her and she wanted to share it with children while they are young enough to incorporate a deeper appreciation of nature and it provides. The sharing, based on this actual experience, came out in the form of a children's fiction story (her new picture book set in Michigan).
