Earlier today, BroadwayWorld announced the official casting of the four major roles in Cameron Mackintosh's highly anticipated Broadway revival of Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil's mega-musical LES MISERABLES - Ramin Karimloo as Jean Valjean, Will Swenson as Javert, Caissie Levy as Fantine and Nikki M. James as Eponine - and, now, those spectacular stars recount some of their fondest memories of attending the show as observers, reflect on the prescient themes of Victor Hugo's timeless novel and reveal what specifically drives their passion for the powerful material, as well as look ahead to the new production of the international stage sensation arriving back on Broadway in 2014.

Village Theatre's Artistic Director Steve Tomkins 'dreamed a dream' many years ago when he first saw actor Greg Stone perform in Les Miserables. After directing Stone in Jesus Christ Superstar in 1993 Tomkins wondered, "Could I put together my 'dream cast,' that included Stone, and present this monstrous legendary mega-hit musical Les Miserables at Village Theatre?" Scheduling conflicts, rights issues and budget constraints stood in his way, but much like the character Jean Valjean, Tomkins persisted. Over a decade later the stage production rights became available for a short window of time (that window closes when the Broadway revival of Les Miserables opens in March of 2014) and Tomkins got to work putting the many pieces together for a Village Theatre production.

It's strange to think that Les Miserables, the worldwide musical sensation by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alan Boublil, is just now being licensed to regional theaters. Demand for Les Miserables has grown within the regional theatre world in the 27 years since the show premiered, and that demand is definitely why The Playhouse in San Antonio and Zach Theatre in nearby Austin feel they can both present the show at the same time. So if you're in Central Texas, which production do you see? My answer: see both if you can, but if that's not an option, then I have the following suggestion. If you want to see a grand, epic, romantically designed production with a few strong performances, catch the version in Austin, but if you prefer a more modestly designed production that creates a darker, more emotional world in which every performance is spectacular, go to The Playhouse in San Antonio.

Musicals rarely reach the phenomenal success of Les Miserables. It's played in London's West End for 28 years and counting. The Original Broadway production ran for over 6,500 performances and played for over 16 years, and the recent film adaptation won 3 Academy Awards and earned over $440 million worldwide. Whether you're a longtime fan of the musical or a newcomer to it, Zach Theatre's current production of it certainly does it justice and shows exactly why Les Miserables is an international hit that others are measured against. This is a solid, soaring production of one of the most beloved musicals of all time.

It is always interesting to see a local production of the classic Tony winning musical LES MISERABLES. It is such a huge show and to perform it locally is a huge undertaking. However, if you have a wonderful cast and the fantastic direction of Jeffrey Sanzel, the production will turn out wonderfully as Theatre Three's did.
