In the world of circus, there is a special term for the opening number. We have been hearing this term, "charivari," in rehearsal a lot lately. Our circus choreographer, Gypsy Snider (of the Montreal based circus company Le 7 doigts de la main), explains that the charivari is a colorful and busy display in which the audience sees brief snippets in rapid succession of all the acts that will be featured that night. It should give the audience a taste of what's to come without spoiling the best tricks or giving too much away; it creates excitement and anticipation.

Set design is by Tony Award-winning designer Scott Pask, costume design by Dominique Lemieux, lighting design by Tony Award-winning designer Kenneth Posner, and sound design by Tony winner and A.R.T. Resident Sound Designer Clive Goodwin. Orchestration is by Tony Award-winner Larry Hochman, Music Supervision by Nadia Di Giallonardo, and the Music Director is Charlie Alterman.

To coincide with Isadora Duncan's 135th birthday May 26, 2012, Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company honors the mother of modern dance by offering a week of performances tonight, May 22 through May 26. The six performances of the program The Art of Isadora will offer a retrospective on the life and art of Isadora Duncan, including signature solos and group works performed with live piano accompaniment by Matthew Ward.

The event raised more than $150,000 for the theatre and its programs, including its educational and outreach programs that bring theatre and the arts to public school students. Casting has been announced for the world premiere of HEAT WAVE: THE JACK COLE PROJECT, a new musical entertainment set to debut at Queens Theatre (14 United Nations Avenue South in Flushing Meadows Corona Park) with performances starting on May 3rd 2012.
Today in 1999, Fosse opened at the Broadhurst THeatre, where it ran for 1093 performances. Fosse is a three-act musical revue showcasing the choreography of Bob Fosse. The original Broadway production, conceived and directed by Richard Maltby, Jr. and Ann Reinking was choreographed by Reinking and Chet Walker. In 2002, Fosse, featuring Reinking and Ben Vereen, was aired as part of the Great Performances series on PBS television. A London production opened at the West End Prince of Wales Theatre on February 8, 2000 and closed January 6, 2001. The musical did not recreate the musical numbers as originally presented but instead had primarily black-and-white costumes (including the all-important hats), set against a simple setting.
