William Gillette Biographer Henry Zecher Speaks at Pen Players Tonight

Sherlock Holmes' adventures have been in print since 1887. Arthur Conan Doyle's literary creation has been made into radio dramas, major motion pictures and television dramas. William Gillette was the first playwright/actor to write a play and then star as Sherlock Holmes on stage. William Gillette as a character is making his debut on stage in Peninsula Players' production of Ken Ludwig's 'The Game's Afoot,' which runs through Sept. 1.

NY Philharmonic Opens Season with Yo-Yo Ma Gala Concert, 9/25

Music Director Alan Gilbert opens the New York Philharmonic's 2013-14 season with the Opening Gala concert, headlined by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Gilbert will conduct Mr. Ma and the Orchestra in two works by Argentinian composers: the World Premiere of Octavio Brunetti's arrangement, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, of a suite from Astor Piazzolla's La serie del Ángel, and Osvaldo Golijov's Azul, composed for the eminent cellist. The program opens with Ravel's Alborada del gracioso and closes with Bolero, two pieces that reflect the French composer's fascination with Spain. The concert will be telecast nationally on Live From Lincoln Center at a later date, and Classical 105.9 FM WQXR at 7:30 p.m.

Timmy The Great bills itself as 'a madcap musical for revolutionaries of all ages.' One could easily interpret this as meaning: It's for children from the Upper West Side. Actually, there's much here that anyone could enjoy. The show, based on a 1999 children's book about a kingdom where the adults and children switch roles, is stuffed full -- too full -- of lively dancing, tuneful songs and inspired clowning.

Pink Martini to Perform at Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Annual Gala, 9/7

Signaling the start of the social season, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will hold its annual Gala Concert on Saturday, September 7 at 8:30 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. This year's Gala will be led by BSO Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly. The concert features the band Pink Martini, who will collaborate with the BSO for an intoxicating mix of cabaret, samba, jazz and Hollywood musicals.

The Emory Cinematheque, a weekly series of free 35mm screenings, presents 'American Comedy Classics,'beginning Wednesday August 28 with Billy Wilder's 'Some Like it Hot' (1959). The screenings take place each Wednesday (plus one Sunday evening) in White Hall 205. A screening of Buster Keaton's films will take place on Sunday, September 29 at 7:30. A special screening of Paul Schrader's 'Mishima' (1985) will be held on Wednesday September 25 as part of famed composer Philip Glass's visit to Emory.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced Fasten Your Seatbelts (Part 2): 20th Century Fox (today, August 9-15), a summertime big screen showcase of some of the movie studio's most beloved and unforgettable films. Presented via DCP restorations and beautiful studio library 35mm prints, with a focus on a single artist and their creative contribution to each film, Fasten Your Seatbelts is sure to be a truly rare movie-going event. In the summer of 2010, FSLC presented the first Fasten Your Seatbelts series to coincide with and celebrate 20th Century Fox's 75th Anniversary. The popularity of that series, including screenings of classics like ALL ABOUT EVE, M*A*S*H and ALIEN all but demanded that Film Society and the studio present a 'sequel' at some point.

The 2013 Pageant of the Masters, a celebration of art in tableaux vivants is honoring eighty years of 'living pictures' at the Festival of Arts, with 'The Big Picture.' It's a theme with a dual purpose: 1) contemplating the relationships between masterpieces of art and the movies they've inspired, and 2) taking a light-hearted look at the Pageant's own history. According to Pageant director Diane Challis Davy, while the resulting production will have an abundance of classical artworks, it will also feature opportunities for theatrical fun and special effects.

The organization has invited all current donors to watch El Desfile Historico, the historic Fiesta Parade, today, August 2, in front of the theater's marquee on State Street, where they will have prime seating for parade viewing.
