BWW Reviews: Michigan Phil Triumphs with Twilight of a Dark Knight Halloween Pops

Every year, the Michigan Philharmonic presents a Halloween pops concert, and this year's was a triumphal success. Held at Steppingstone School for the Gifted, the symphony played in a 'haunted garage,' i.e. a large warehouse decorated by the gifted children. Patrons were invited to wear costumes, as were the symphony musicians. Music Director Nan Washburn arrived in style, wearing a brightly colored clown outfit, riding to the podium on a decorative clown bicycle.

Operalia 2014 Winners Announced

Last night, after a week of competition that brought 40 young singers from 17 nations to Los Angeles, Placido Domingo announced that Rachel Willis-Sorensen, an American soprano, and Mario Chang, a Guatemalan tenor, took the top prizes tonight in the 22nd edition of Operalia, the World Opera Competition. Hosted by LA Opera at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the weeklong contest culminated tonight in a Gala Finals Concert-featuring the LA Opera Orchestra conducted by Mr. Domingo at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion-which was streamed live on Medici TV.

Jonah Bokaer Premieres OCCUPANT at the Adrienne Arsht Center, Now thru 12/8

Choreographer Jonah Bokaer, who has become increasingly recognized for his unique collaborations with emerging and established visual artists, filmmakers, and scientists, will present the world premiere of 'Occupant,' a work he created with his long-time collaborator, visual artist Daniel Arsham, at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts during Art | Basel Miami, tonight, December 6-8. The dance will be seen in preview at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., November 8-10.

Natalie Toro's Christmas CD Release Party Set for Birdland, 12/8

Classically trained, Broadway veteran, Natalie Toro brings her infectious energy and powerhouse vocals, coupled with luscious tones to melt any heart with the release of Just in Time For Christmas, an eclectic holiday collection and music video. The CD features classic holiday favorites, new songs and, duets with such artists as Ryan Kelly and Grammy Award-winner, Jon Secada, and will be available on November 12, 2013 on iTunes, Amazon.com and other online outlets. Winter Opera Saint Louis to Present Charles Gounod's FAUST, 11/8-10

Winter Opera Saint Louis kicks off its seventh season Friday, November 8th (8pm) and Sunday, November 10th (3pm) with Charles Gounod's FAUST, sponsored by Morgan Stanley. Based upon Goethe's tragedy and Michel Carre's play, the story has become iconic: Mephistopheles entices the disillusioned philosopher Faust with the opportunity to have his every desire on earth…in exchange for his soul. Faust's decision threatens to destroy his community, especially his true love, Marguerite. Gounod's score abounds with some of opera's greatest gems, including Valentin's "Avant de quitter ces lieux," Faust's "Salut! demeure chaste et pure," and Marguerite's famous Jewel Song "Ah! Je ris de me voir!"

Matinee "Das Ensemble stellt sich vor 1" in der Wiener Staatsoper

Am Sonntag, 13. Oktober 2013 findet um 11.00 Uhr die erste Matinee der Reihe „Das Ensemble stellt sich vor" in dieser Saison im Gustav Mahler-Saal der Wiener Staatsoper statt. Die beiden Ensemblemitglieder I?ride Marti?nez (Sopran) und Dimitrios Flemotomos (Tenor) pra?sentieren Lieder, Arien und Duette von Georg Friedrich Ha?ndel, Giuseppe Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti, Charles Gounod, Reveriano Soutullo Otero, Gero?nimo Gime?nez / Miguel Nieto, Pablo Soroza?bal und Manuel Penella. Am Klavier werden sie begleitet von Kristin Okerlund.

Carnegie Hall Presents Three New York Premieres Performed by Jessica Rivera, Kelley O'Connor, and Robert Spano, 10/29

On Tuesday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m., sopranoJessica Rivera and mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor are joined by pianist Robert Spanoon a program featuring three New York premieres, two of which are Carnegie Hall co-commissions. Ms. O'Connor and Ms. Rivera have collaborated in concert halls and on modern operatic masterpieces including Osvaldo Golijov's Ainadamar and John Adams's El Niño. This unique program features Ms. O'Connor performing the New York premiere of David Bruce's That Time With You, a four-song cycle that she co-commissioned with Carnegie Hall. Ms. Rivera sings the New York premiere of Jonathan Leshnoff's Monica Songs, another Carnegie Hall co-commission. Two selections from The Kitchen Songbook by Gabriela Lena Frank will also have their New York debuts, sung by both Ms. O'Connor and Ms. Rivera. Completing this diverse program, the artists present vocal duets by Saint-Saens, Mendelssohn, and Gounod, as well as Debussy's erotically charged Chansons de Bilitis and Mompou's haunting "Combat del Somni."
