In honor of the 15 th anniversary of the U.S. publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the first book in the award-winning Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, 15 public libraries nationwide have been chosen as winners of the Harry Potter Public Librarian Contest from Scholastic, the U.S. publisher of the series. Taking inspiration from the series, hundreds of librarians submitted their ideas for Harry Potter celebrations designed to introduce a new generation of readers to the wizarding world. Librarians' ideas include serving Harry Potter-themed food, hosting trivia contests, dressing up as favorite Potter characters, having live owls, house-sorting parties, scavenger hunts, Quidditch matches, wand-making, and classes from Hogwarts such as Potions, Divination, and Herbology. Potter parties will be held on or around August 27, 2013, the date when the new U.S. trade paperbacked editions of the books featuring all new covers by #1 New York Times bestselling author/artist, Kazu Kibuishi are released.

According to published reports, famed producer and director, Manny Fox, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, due to complications deriving from a heart condition. He was 77 years old, currently residing in Pheonix, Arizona, and leaves behind four sons and three grandchildren.
For much of the 20th century, Carl Sandburg (1/6/1878 - 7/22/1967) was synonymous with the American experience, a spokesman on behalf of "the people." One of the most successful writers in the English language, Sandburg was a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winner for his poetry (Cornhuskers, 1918 and Complete Poems, 1950) and part of his six-volume Lincoln biography (Abraham Lincoln: The War Years, 1939). He was also a groundbreaking journalist, folk song collector, children's storyteller, political organizer/activist, novelist, autobiographer, and captivating performer. Yet, after his death, Sandburg's literary legacy faded and his poems, once taught in schools across America, were dismissed under the weight of massive critical attack. The new 90-minute documentary American Masters The Day Carl Sandburg Died, premiering nationally Monday, September 24 at 10 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings) to commemorate the 45th anniversary of his death, provides a dynamic examination of Sandburg's life, work and controversial legacy from a modern perspective. The film will be available on DVD September 25 through PBS Distribution.
