It was an exciting, interesting and surprising season in the Philadelphia/ South Jersey theater world. Here are some of my favorites picks with one additional New York entry worth remembering.
Whimsical, poetic, and surprisingly clever, TOTEM---the latest touring Cirque du Soleil spectacular to hit Southern California---is currently performing under a large tent erected at the Orange County Great Park's Festival Site through December 29 (the traveling troupe of 46 will then move to the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles for additional shows starting January 17, 2014). Somewhere between science and legend TOTEM explores the ties that bind Man to other species, all brought to you "Cirque-style" in a heart stopping thrill show of acrobatics, special effects and incredible sets and costumes.
Katarina Dalayman is one of a handful of top Wagnerian sopranos in the world, but for the first act of the Met's GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, the climax of the Met's second 'Ring' cycle of the season, she didn't seem very heroic. Neither, for that matter, did tenor Jay Hunter Morris, who caused quite a stir when he jumped into GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG's premiere season a year ago. Who knows what was wrong? In any case, they recovered vocally for Act 2 and excitingly sailed through the rest of the mammoth, exhausting work.

The Ring cycles will begin April 6 at 1 p.m. with Das Rheingold and continue through the last day of the Met season, May 11, with an 11 a.m. matinee of Gotterdammerung.
