O'Neill Theater Center Accepting Scripts for 2015 Playwrights Conference

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center is now accepting scripts for development during the 2015 National Playwrights Conference. Applicants may submit works to the O'Neill's Open Submissions Process through Friday, October 17, 2014.

Chris Isaacson Presents has announced a one-night-only concert event at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre on Saturday, August 16 at 8pm. Broadway Under the Stars will star Tony Award-winner Jennifer Holliday (Dreamgirls) and will also feature (in alphabetical order) Obba Babatunde (Dreamgirls), Erich Bergen (Jersey Boys, stage and film), Rogelio Douglas, Jr. (In the Heights), Danny Gurwin (Little Women) and Tony Award-nominee Chad Kimball (Memphis). David Galligan will direct, and the music director is Gerald Sternbach.

Tony Award-nominee Obba Babatunde has been set to host Broadway Under The Stars on Saturday, August 16 at 8pm at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre. Produced by Chris Isaacson Presents, this one-night-only concert event will star Tony Award-winner Jennifer Holliday along with (in alphabetical order) Erich Bergen (Jersey Boys, stage and film), Rogelio Douglas, Jr. (In the Heights), Danny Gurwin (Little Women), and Chad Kimball (Memphis). The three programs -- today, May 29, June 19, and August 7 -- are held in The Library for the Performing Arts' Bruno Walter Auditorium and are free and open to the public.

With ZACH Theatre's uniquely-Austin creative flair, the celebrated annual Red Hot and Soul Gala raised $573,000 at The Great ZACHsby themed soiree hosted by Co-chairs Bobbi Topfer and Armando Zambrano on Saturday, May 3, 2014. More than 400 guests were entertained at the elegant Topfer Theater, by flamboyantly costumed dancers, locally and nationally acclaimed actors and students of ZACH Theatre's Pre-Professional Company. All funds raised will support ZACH Theatre's mainstage and educational programs. The evening honored James C. Armstrong for his outstanding contributions to the Austin arts community.

The award, presented to Ms. Streep at a Gala event in her honor, will be held at the Edison Ballroom, New York City, on Monday, April 21. Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to Launch National Music Theater Institute in Fall 2014

According to the Hartford Courant, the State of Connecticut has just approved a $3 million grant to the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to create a new National Music Theater Institute. The program will launch in Fall 2014 and will include 'seven new dormitory cottages creating living spaces for 65people, a laundry building, a new rehearsal hall and conversion of an existing structure into a production facility.'

BWW Reviews: Dazzling with the DREAMGIRLS at Mad Cow

The most striking thing about Mad Cow Theatre's production of DREAMGIRLS is the amount of sparkles on the costumes and the live band accompanying the performers. Few Orlando musicals use a live band because of logistics; however, with music written by Henry Krieger and lyrics/book by Tom Eyen, anything less than live music would be a travesty. Though the band is not seen, they are heard loud and clear.

BECOMING SNAF-U is Released

As an administrator at a major US university, author G.H. Jones saw firsthand the anguish and hand-wringing that took place when his institution fell out of the US News and World Report's Top 25 rankings. It occurred to him then that other universities surely had experienced the same “fall from grace,” causing him to wonder about the lengths to which they might go to get back into the US News' Top 25. These musings led him to write a fictional account of a disgraced university's funny, entertaining and, not to mention, desperate attempts to get back on the list, aptly titled Becoming Snaf-u.
