BWW Review: THE PARCHMAN HOUR at The Guthrie Theater
by Karen Bovard
- Oct 21, 2016
In 1961, Parchman Penitentiary served as a detention site for the Freedom Riders, mixed race and mixed gender groups of activists who put their lives on the line to protest segregation. To keep their spirits up in jail, they sang. This documentary theater piece is rich in music, and tells their story while tying directly to themes about race and justice in America today.

Legendary artist and activist, Joan Baez, has been nominated as part of the class of 2017 for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Baez's career has spanned over 50 years during which she unselfconsciously introduced Bob Dylan to the world in 1963, marched on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement with Martin Luther King, inspired Vaclav Havel to fight for a Czech Republic, and continues to this day to stand passionately on behalf of causes she embraces. She is the recipient of many honors including the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award and Amnesty International's Ambassador of Conscience award. Her early albums introduced songs, which found their way into the rock vernacular including “House Of the Rising Sun” (the Animals), “John Riley” (the Byrds), and “Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You” (Led Zeppelin).

by Marianka Swain

'I shook up the world.' So says young gun and new heavyweight champion Cassius Clay (shortly to become Muhammad Ali) in those heady moments after his shock defeat of Sonny Liston in February 1964. But a meeting that same night with three African-American friends of equivalent status - superstar crooner Sam Cooke, NFL hero Jim Brown and controversial preacher Malcolm X - leads to soul-searching about the definition of success, and how best men like Clay can represent their community in a divided nation.
