Tickets are on sale for I Need Some Space: The Lyrics of Robby Sandler, returning to the Laurie Beechman theatre on Monday, May 19th at 7 pm, after a sold out debut this past July. The evening of music by the BMI lyricist is produced by Rudy Scala and features the talents of Mariand Torres (The Great Comet, Wicked), Ken Clark (The Great Comet, February House), Andrew Keltz (The Golden Land), Lizzie Hagstedt (Southern Comfort, Sweeney Todd), Shoshanna Richman (I Heart NY, Fiddler), and Ariana Shore (The Performers). Among the composer collaborators featured in the hour long evening are Daniel Green, Lizzie Hagstedt, Jonathan Monro, Andy Roninson, and Benjamin Velez. The International Festival of Arts & Ideas today announced complete details for Festival 2014, taking place from June 14 to 28 in New Haven, Connecticut. The theme for the Festival's 19th annual event is Transformation & Tradition, gathering together artists and thinkers who have drawn from the past in order to imagine the future in ways that are startling, bold, and exciting.
The YALE INSTITUTE FOR MUSIC THEATRE has selected two original book musicals to be developed in an intensive lab setting in New Haven, June 3-15. Afterland, with music and lyrics by Benjamin Velez and book and lyrics by Kathryn Hathaway, will be directed by Mark Brokaw; and Clouds are Pillows for the Moon, with music by Tidtaya Sinutoke and book and lyrics by Ty Defoe, will be directed by Leigh Silverman. The Institute culminates with open rehearsal readings of each project, presented as a part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, on June 14 and 15.

This week's featured composer is Benjamin Velez. Benjamin Velez is a composer/lyricist and recent Columbia University graduate where he studied film and wrote the 114th Annual Varsity Show. He is a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater workshop where he was named the Jerry Harrington award winner for the 2nd year workshop. His work has been featured as part of AWOL's 8 Minute Musicals at NYMF, The Platform concert series, and in last year's NEO concert. He is currently workshopping his original musical Afterland with collaborator Kathryn Hathaway, and recently premiered the title song at Joe's Pub as part of the latest CEC concert. While originally from Miami, he is now happy to call New York home sweet home.
