Cygnet Theatre's GEM OF THE OCEAN and Mingei International Museum's Bill Traylor Exhibit Celebrate African-American Artists, Spring 2013

Cygnet Theatre and Mingei International Museum will join forces in 2013 to celebrate the work of two African-American artists. Mingei will present 'Bill Traylor: Drawings from the Collections of the High Museum of Art and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts' from February 9 - May 12, 2013, and Cygnet will premiere August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean from January 24 - February 24, 2013. The partnership between both organizations is designed to build audiences for these two important shows during Black History Month.

Seattle Rep Hosts 11th Annual Playwriting Project Performance Tonight

As part of the 11th Annual Playwriting Project, Seattle Rep will present four new works by student playwrights from Roosevelt High School (Seattle) tonight, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Leo K. Theatre. Each student has written a 10-minute play under the mentorship of a professional playwright, and the works will be directed by Seattle Rep education staff and performed by student actors.

Today in 1989, City of Angels opened at the Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre), where it ran for 879 performances. City of Angels is a musical comedy with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by David Zippel, and book by Larry Gelbart. The musical weaves together two plots, the 'real' world of a writer trying to turn his book into a screenplay, and the 'reel' world of the fictional film. The musical is an homage to the film noir genre of motion pictures that rose to prominence in the 1940s. It was directed by Michael Blakemore with sets designed by Robin Wagner and costumes by Florence Klotz.

Cygnet Theatre to Present GEM OF THE OCEAN, Beginning January 24

Cygnet Theatre will continue its 10th Anniversary Season by presenting the San Diego Premiere of August Wilson'sGem of the Ocean. The first play, chronologically, in Wilson's epic Century Cycle, Gem of the Ocean is set to perform January 24ththrough February 24th, 2013, at Cygnet's Old Town Theatre. Press Opening is scheduled for February 2nd, 2013.

City Theatre Extends SOUTH SIDE STORIES Through 1/13

Due to popular demand, City Theatre extends the critically-acclaimed world premiere of Tami Dixon's South Side Stories for one week only from January 8 through 13, 2013. Directed by Matt M. Morrow, South Side Stories will run for six additional performances in City Theatre's Hamburg Studio Theatre: Tuesday, January 8 and Wednesday, January 9 at 7pm; Thursday, January 10 and Friday, January 11 at 8pm; Saturday, January 12 at 5:30pm; and Sunday, January 13 at 2pm.

In the New York area, it airs on WABC Channel 7 from 9am to 10am. The cast will kick off "Live with Kelly & Michael's "Holidays in New York" series with a special performance from the "Seasons Greetings, A JERSEY BOYS Christmas" CD.

Cygnet Theatre Receives NEA Grant to Support August Wilson's GEM OF THE OCEAN, 1/24-2/24

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Rocco Landesman announced today that Cygnet Theatre is one of 832 non-profit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. Cygnet Theatre is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support Gem of the Ocean, the first play of the August Wilson Cycle Plays. The grant also helps support outreach activities including post show forums and a presentation of Walking in the Shadows of August Wilson by Antonio T.J. Johnson. In total, nine San Diego non-profits received grants in this latest round of funding totaling $213,000.

Signature Theatre's THE PIANO LESSON Receives Second One Week Extension; Initial Run Sold Out

Signature Theatre has announced a second one-week extension for THE PIANO LESSON by August Wilson and directed by Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson. The production, originally scheduled to conclude its run on December 9 and already extended once through December 16, will now play through Sunday, December 23. The production opened on Sunday, November 18 in The Irene Diamond Stage at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street between 9th and 10th Avenues) to unanimous critical praise. Tickets during the extension weeks are $75 each.
