Dance Theatre of Harlem to Headline NJPAC's Martin Luther King Celebration, 1/17

Experience the poetry-in-motion of the legendary Dance Theatre of Harlem, as they headline NJPAC's Martin Luther King celebration on Friday, January 17th in Prudential Hall. The renowned ballet company was co-founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and the late Karel Shook as a positive and uplifting way to turn despair into hope following the assassination of Dr. King. Mitchell was the first African-American principal dancer at the New York City Ballet, and Karel Shook, had been the first teacher and ballet master of the Dutch National Ballet. Mitchell began by founding a dance school and later a company that would bring new opportunity to the lives of young people in the Harlem neighborhood in which he grew up.

Aaron Clifton Moten, Jonny Orsini, Phillipa Soo & Amber Iman Nominated for Clive Barnes Awards

Susan Stroman and Wendy Whelan are set to host the 2014 Clive Barnes Awards, which will be held on January 6 (3pm), at the Walter Reade Theatre. This years' nominees for theatre are Aaron Clifton Moten for his performance in The Flick, Jonny Orsini for his performance in The Nance, Phillipa Soo for her performance in Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, and Amber Iman for her performance in Soul Doctor. This year's nominees for dance are Talli Jackson (Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company), Lloyd Mayor (Martha Graham Dance Company), Xiaochuan Xie (Martha Graham Dance Company), and Calvin Royal III(American Ballet THeatre.)

Last weekend in Los Angeles on Saturday July 27, Chita Rivera received the DIZZY FEET FOUNDATION INSPIRATION AWARD at a gala to celebrate dance, held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. DIZZY FEET was founded by Nigel Lythgoe, Adam Shankman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Katie Holmes. Arthur Mitchell, founder of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, was also honored. Other guests included Jenna Elfman, Paula Abdul, Jane Lynch, Anna Kendrick, Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz, Cat Deeley and Wayne Brady.

NY City Center to Celebrate 10th Anniversary of FALL FOR DANCE Festival with Alvin Ailey & Royal Ballet, Begin. 9/16

New York City Center is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Fall for Dance Festival with a very special season, beginning with two free evenings of dance at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, hosted by The Public Theater, on September 16 and 17 (rain date, September 18). The Festival will continue at City Center from September 25 - October 5 with performances by 20 acclaimed dance companies and artists from around the world, including three new works from today's most exciting young choreographers, commissioned by New York City Center in celebration of the tenth anniversary.

Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival Opens the 81st Season with Dance Theatre of Harlem, 6/19

Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH), the groundbreaking and newly revitalized classical and contemporary ballet company, will open the 2013 Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival season in the Ted Shawn Theatre June 19-23. Led by founding member and former principal dancer, Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, the company will present a range of classic and new ballet work including George Balanchine's Agon, The Lark Ascending by Alvin Ailey, and Far But Close by Canadian contemporary choreographer John Alleyne.

It wasn't until Frederick Ashton undertook a new creation of the ballet that it finally became an international hit. He referred to it as his 'poor man's Pastorale,' a lovely reference to Beethoven's symphony where things go from simplicity to thunderstorms and back to normalcy and contentment with the world. He commissioned The Royal Opera House conductor, John Lanchberry, to orchestrate a new score that, while recalling French culture and manners (it did begin as a French ballet after all), is firmly rooted in an English sensibility

The Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) held its Vision 2013 Gala honoring actress/singer Vanessa L. Williams on February 26th at the Mandarin Hotel in New York City. Rob McClure, Lauren Lovette and More Nominated for 2012 Clive Barnes Foundation Awards; Ceremony Set for Lincoln Center, 12/10

The third annual Clive Barnes Foundation Awards, established by Barnes' widow Valerie Taylor-Barnes, to honor outstanding young talents from the worlds of Theater and Dance, will be held this Monday, December 10th at 2:30 p.m. at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65 Street). One recipient will be announced from each category.

Clive Barnes Awards Recipients to Be Announced, 12/10

On Monday, December 10th at 2:30pm, with an audience of 300 in attendance, the winners of the 3rd annual Clive Barnes Awards will be announced. With Michael Reidel serving as host, the presenters this year include Frederic Franklin, CBE, Paloma Herrera, and Maya Johansen (Bernes).The Clive Barnes Foundation have previously announced the nominees for the 2012 Clive Barnes Awards, a distinguished annual honor recognizing the work of young actors and dancers in New York City. This years' nominees for theatre are Joaquina Kalukango for her performance in Signature Theatre Company's production of Katori Hall's Hurt Village, Derek Klena for his performance in Second Stage Theatre's production of Dogfight, directed by Joe Mantello, Rob McClure for his performance in Chaplin, now in performances at the Barrymore Theatre, and Stephen Tyrone Williams for his performance in Signature Theatre Company's production of Athol Fugard's My Children, My Africa. For dance, the nominees are Lauren Lovette (New York City Ballet), Steven Melendez (New York Theater Ballet), and Ashley Murphy (Dance Theater of Harlem).

Seattle Theatre Group to Donate Nov 2012 Ticket Proceeds to Help Those Affected by Hurricane Sandy

In the wake of disaster caused by Hurricane Sandy, The Seattle Theatre Group will donate $5 from each ticket purchased to the November Seattle performances by New York's beloved Dance Theatre of Harlem, starting today. The 43 year -old company, co-founded by Arthur Mitchell, and Cornish alum Karel Schook, will perform in Seattle at the Moore Theatre on November 16 & 17 only.
