Art Institute of Chicago Presents Exhibition of Mexican Political Prints, Now thru 10/12

In 1945, the Art Institute of Chicago commissioned Mexican printmaker and political activist Leopoldo Méndez to create a custom woodblock print that would be the centerpiece of the artist's first major exhibition in the United States. Now, almost 70 years later, that print and the original woodblock Mendez carved are part of the exhibition What May Come: The Taller de Gráfica Popular and the Mexican Political Print, on view in the museum's Jean and Steven Goldman Prints and Drawing Galleries in the Richard and Mary Gray Wing from July 4 through Oct. 12, 2014.

New York Live Arts Announces Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company's 2014-2015 Touring Season

The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, New York Live Arts' Resident Dance Company, announced today the touring programs and productions for the 2014-2015 Season. The Company will perform and conduct residencies in more than 11 cities in eight states over the next 12 months, making their debut at a number of venues across the U.S. Highlights of the 2014-2015 Season include the New York City premiere of Story/Time (35, 36, 37 & 38) November 4 - 8 and 11 - 15 on the Company's home stage at the New York Live Arts theater; the world premiere of Analogy (working title) in June 2015 at Montclair State University; the Company debut at Dancers' Workshop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming; and more. Touring programs for the 2014-2015 season include Analogy (working title), the Company's newest work; Story/Time; Play and Play: An Evening of Movement and Music; Body Against Body; and A Rite.

New Architecture Exhibition Features Dynamic Installations of the Works of Stanley Tigerman and Zago Architecture

Architecture to Scale, a new exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, demonstrates the complex process and vast range of scales of architectural representation through the work of two groundbreaking architects in adjacent installations, Stanley Tigerman and Zago Architecture. The exhibition in the Architecture and Design galleries (283-285) and will be on view until September 14, 2014.

René Magritte, the playful and provocative Belgian Surrealist who set out to create works that would 'challenge the real world' by making 'everyday objects shriek out loud,' is the focus of a major exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago: Magritte, The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926-1938. The show opens today, June 25, 2014 and runs through October 13, 2014 in Regenstein Hall. A collaborative effort between three museums, the exhibition will make its final stop at the Art Institute following its premiere at The Museum of Modern Art in New York on September 28, 2013 and its current run at the Menil Collection, Houston.

Nancy Graves' First Exhibition at Mitchell-Innes & Nash Closes This Friday, 6/27

Mitchell-Innes & Nash is delighted to announce its representation of the work of Nancy Graves through The Nancy Graves Foundation. The gallery's first Graves exhibition focuses on works depicting flora and fauna in media ranging from gouache and watercolor on paper, to painting, to bronze polychromed sculpture. The show presents work from the 1970s to the 1990s, and is on view through June 27, 2014.

NIGHTHAWKS By Edward Hopper Tops The List Of American Artworks Selected For The Largest Outdoor Art Show

People throughout the United States have voted for the works of American art they most want to see installed in Art Everywhere US, the initiative that will transform billboards, bus shelters, subway platforms, airport dioramas, movie theaters and more into a free, open-air art gallery across the country. The top three vote-getters are in the Art Institute of Chicago's permanent collection: Edward Hopper's Nighthawks (1942), Mary Cassatt's The Child's Bath (1893) and Grant Wood's American Gothic (1930) took first, second and third. All three are currently on display at the Art Institute.

American Blues Theater Hosts Benefit Performance of Multi-Award Winning GROUNDED, 6/21

Producing Artistic Director Gwendolyn Whiteside and American Blues Theater, Chicago's second oldest Equity ensemble, are proud to announce the Saturday, June 21 performance of Grounded, by George Brant and directed by Lisa Portes, at the Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. is a benefit performance for Children of War Foundation. Proceeds from the performance will go directly to surgery and medical treatment for Shah Bibi Tarakhail, an Afghan Child Affected by War. The running time is approximately 80 minutes. Grounded runs through July 13. Art Institute of Chicago Announces Robert M. Levy as New Chairman of Board of Trustees

The Art Institute of Chicago announces the election of Robert M. Levy as the organization's new Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Levy will replace Thomas J. Pritzker as the leader of the governing body of both the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Institute's Museum. Pritzker, who has served for eight years as Chairman, has been a trustee of the Art Institute since 1988 and will remain on the Board. Levy, who has been a trustee of the Art Institute since 2009, will take over as Chair when Pritzker's term ends in November.

Art Institute of Chicago Gala SURREALISTICALLY CHIC Set for Today

The Woman's Board and the Board of Trustees of the Art Institute of Chicago are coming together to host a 'Surrealistically Chic' Gala tonight, June 20, 2014, celebrating the opening of the highly anticipated exhibition, Magritte: Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926-1938. Considered by many to be the city's social event of the season, the Gala will provide guests with a private preview of the Magritte exhibition that will open to the public on June 24 and run through October 13, 2014.

Mickalene Thomas at Lehmann Maupin, 6/26-8/8

Lehmann Maupin is delighted to debut Tete de Femme, a new body of work by artistMickalene Thomas. In her fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, Thomas explores the intricacies of female beauty through painting and collage, focusing on how artifice serves both to mask and reveal the individual essence of her subjects. The artist will be present for an opening reception on Thursday, June 26 from 6 to 8PM.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) announces today the 2014/15 World's Stage Series-bringing the most fresh and innovative work from theater companies around the world to Chicago and touring CST-developed productions to festivals abroad. From Australia, South Africa, France, England, Scotland and Belgium, this season's offerings for Chicago audiences feature productions from eight internationally acclaimed theater companies. In keeping with the mission of the World's Stage program to serve as an international cultural ambassador for Chicago, the Theater is also touring CST-produced work abroad to Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Art Institute of Chicago to Mark 100th Anniversary of Saul Steinberg's Birth, 7/4-10/12

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of noted artist Saul Steinberg (1914 - 1999) on June 15, the Art Institute of Chicago is pleased to announce that The Saul Steinberg Foundation has donated 54 of his original works on paper to the museum, including five of his distinctively whimsical masks drawn on paper bags.
