Shannon Stratton Named Chief Curator of the Museum of Arts and Design

Lewis Kruger, Chairman of the Board of the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), today announced the appointment of Shannon Stratton to the position of William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator, effective June 2015. In this role, Stratton will work closely with Nanette L. Laitman Director Glenn Adamson to oversee the Museum's diverse exhibition program and collections, foster relationships with artists and designers, and develop new strategies to engage contemporary audiences.

Chance The Rapper Set for LOUDER THAN A BOMB's Team Finals, 3/28

Young Chicago Authors (YCA), producers of the world's largest youth poetry festival, is currently presenting Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB). The six-week festival culminates with Indy Finals on Saturday, March 21 at the Rubloff Theater at the Art Insitute of Chicago (280 S Columbus Dr, ) and Team Finals on Saturday, March 28 the Arie Crown Theater (2301 S Lake Shore Dr.) Both events run from 6 - 9 p.m. These events will feature the most talented youth poets in the Chicago area, sharing verses filled with their insights, including stories of injustice and inequality.

The Pacific Symphony and the Laguna Art Museum Host MUSIC MEETS ART, 3/26

'Music Meets Art' at Laguna Art Museum when Pacific Symphony Music Director Carl St.Clair joins the museum's Executive Director Malcolm Warner in a stimulating conversation about art and music on Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m., with a reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event also includes a musical performance by Pacific Symphony musicians, led by violist Cheryl Gates. This concert is part of a series of free and low-cost concerts called, 'Freshly Squeezed Music: Pacific Symphony in Your Orange County Neighborhood,' created in celebration of St.Clair's 25th anniversary leading the Symphony and championing access to quality music in the community. Heartbeat Opera Presents the ONE ACT FESTIVAL, Now thru 3/22

Heartbeat Opera is a new company intent upon re-imagining opera in intimate spaces for a new generation. Employing a minimalism that allows the emotional integrity of the music to shine through, the company's work focuses on the body of the singer and the visceral power of the music. Co-Artistic Directors Louisa Proske and Ethan Heard, who trained together in the Directing program at the Yale School of Drama, are committed to nurturing the actor in every singer they work with. The company creates productions of classics and new pieces that are daring and visceral—productions that manifest the emotional grandeur and theatrical power of opera with minimal means. Heartbeat's one-act festival presentation of György Kurtág's Kafka-Fragments, directed by Heard, and the New York premiere of Jacques Offenbach's Daphnis & Chloé, in a new English translation directed by Proske, marks this young company's debut. Heartbeat Opera's resident music ensemble Cantata Profana, described by The New York Times as “a stylish early music ensemble,” will provide musical accompaniment.

Art Institute Presents IRELAND: CROSSROADS OF ART AND DESIGN, Opening Today

Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design, 1690-1840, will open at the Art Institute of Chicago on St. Patrick's Day, today, March 17, 2015, with a special ribbon-cutting featuring bagpipes and local dignitaries. It will be the first major exhibition to showcase the decorative and fine arts of 18th century Ireland, bringing together more than 300 objects – many never before seen in public – lent by public and private collectors across North America. The exhibition, which continues through June 7, 2015, will provide an extraordinarily rich overview of Ireland's creative legacy. To add to the Gaelic atmosphere of the show, a temporary Irish pub will be created in the museum's Café Moderno where guests can hoist a beer after they visit the exhibition.

Nohra Haime Gallery to Display EVE SONNEMAN: LIGHTNESS OF YOUTH Exhibit, 3/24

Renowned American photographer, Eve Sonneman, is celebrated for her singular technique of pairing stills taken seconds apart, and presenting them side-by-side. In 1971, her career launched when she was included in the Young Photographers exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Since then, she has continued to explore photography with an insightful talent; always observing the tiny, delicate changes occurring in a split second.

NYU's KNOWLEDGE CARNIVAL Set for Today

Independent Curators International (ICI), Pratt Manhattan Gallery, and Franklin Furnace will present Knowledge Carnival, a series of student performances developed in Professor Karen Finley's class titled Creative Response: Performance Matters, held at the Department of Art and Public Policy, Tisch School of the Arts, NYU. Martha Wilson, founding director of Franklin Furnace, invited the burgeoning artists to present their work at Pratt Manhattan Gallery after visiting the class in fall 2014. Curated by Leonie Ettinger, the programming is inspired by Wilson's body of work and the myriad experimental performances embedded in Franklin Furnace's history.

MAD Presents 'Richard Estes: Painting New York City', Beginning Today

From today, March 10 to September 20, 2015, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents Richard Estes: Painting New York City, the first exhibition of the art of Richard Estes to focus on the artist's technique and process, through an examination of his New York City paintings, prints, and photographs. Spanning from the mid-1960s to the present and featuring over forty paintings and works on paper, the exhibition is Estes' first New York City museum survey. It is also the first solo painting show in the history of the Museum of Arts and Design.

Lincoln Center's Vera List Art Project to Display Rare Angel Otero Print, Through 3/27

Now in its 52nd year of offering outstanding contemporary visual art inspired by Lincoln Center, the Vera List Art Project has just released its newest print, a limited edition work by Angel Otero, one of today's fastest-rising young painters. Otero's Untitled (SK-PH), 2015 is released in partnership with Artspace, the leading online marketplace for contemporary art, who will offer it for exclusive sale.
