The Annex Theatre advertises their current production 'Unexpected Wilderness' to be a 'farcical romp'. I saw Jaryl Draper's show at The Annex, and I beg to differ. A farce is a madcap comedy where characters find themselves in extreme, exaggerated, ridiculous situations, and hilarity ensues. A ridiculous situation does not feel ridiculous if it's already been done dozens of times, in dozens of ways. Yes, this play uniquely showcases Bigfoot as a character, but beyond that, all the hijinks among those interacting with Bigfoot in the woods are painfully predictable, making 'Unexpected Wilderness' feel more like a formulaic sitcom.

Slice of life plays, like "Puny Humans" currently playing at Annex Theatre, are difficult at best especially when focusing on one specific sub-culture such as Comic-Con attendees. You need something new to say about your subjects, you need to make your subjects empathetic and you need an over-arching reason for us to be looking at this particular slice of life. Unfortunately writers Bret Fetzer and Keiko Green fail at all three of those elements making their 2 hour and 45 minute show (yeah, you heard me) drone on.

The Playwrights' Center and Jerome Foundation are pleased to announce the 2016-17 Jerome Fellows, Many Voices Fellows and Many Voices Mentees. The Jerome Fellowship for emerging playwrights is the Jerome Foundation's longest-awarded program, entering its 40th year. The Many Voices Fellowship was created in 1994 in partnership with the Jerome Foundation and significantly expanded in 2013.
