Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces a four-day festival featuring performances by 11 youth ensembles from the Community Engagement program Voices of Now. The festival will bring together more than 150 young artists, ages 11-23, from D.C., Maryland and Virginia who have been working with professional theater artists from Arena Stage for eight months to devise original one-act plays. The ensembles will come together May 9-12, 2012 to perform and discuss their work in the Arlene and Robert Kogod Cradle.
Casting is announced for Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater's production of Meredith Willson's THE MUSIC MAN. Artistic Director Molly Smith helms this classic family musical, which stars the previously announced Kate Baldwin (Tony Award nominee for Broadway's Finian's Rainbow) as Marian the librarian, who will be joined by Burke Moses (original Gaston in Broadway's Beauty and the Beast) as Harold Hill. The Music Man runs May 11-July 22, 2012 in the Fichandler Stage.

The 2011/12 Arena Stage Student Playwrights Project invites all students in fifth through 12th grades in the District of Columbia and its neighboring counties to enter into competition an original 10-minute play. Entries must be delivered to Arena Stage by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2011.

The festival will bring together more than 100 local artists from ages 11 to 21 who live in D.C., Maryland and Virginia and have been participating in workshops and rehearsals focused on movement, vocal expression, creativity and team work for the past eight months.
Director of Community Engagement Anita Maynard-Losh leads all education and outreach programs at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. Her extensive background in arts education began with acting, directing, then teaching at American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and throughout Alaska. As director, her job is not only administrative and hands-on education, it's an important part of Arena's artistic strategy and mission to enrich their community through theatre. Voices of Now and the DC Ticket Partnership are two of Arena Stage's programs that add to students' arts education.
