NPR's Ari Shapiro to Perform at BSO Gala, 9/7

Signaling the start of the social season, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will hold its annual Gala Concert on Saturday, September 7 at 8:30 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. This year's Gala will be led by BSO Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly. The concert features the band Pink Martini with vocalist Storm Large, who will collaborate with the BSO for an intoxicating mix of cabaret, samba, jazz and Hollywood musicals. National Public Radio's news correspondent Ari Shapiro, a frequent guest vocalist with Pink Martini, will perform.

Cryptic Fascination Theater to Present Sarah Kane's BLASTED Off-Off Broadway, 9/11-28

Sarah Kane's controversial drama 'Blasted,' which drew first outrage and then acclaim from audiences and critics when it had its premiere in 1995 at the Royal Court Theater Upstairs in London, will return to New York for a three week run this September at the Duo Multicultural Arts Center as Cryptic Fascination Theater Company's inaugural production.

When abstract expressionist and celebrated bad boy of the art world Mark Rothko lands a commission to create a series of large murals, he hires an assistant - and what takes place between them is a visceral experience that spills off the stage and will forever change the way you see the color red. International City Theatre presents Red, the fiery and fiercely funny Tony, Drama Desk and Drama League Award winner for Best Play by John Logan. Directed by caryn desai [sic] and starring Tony Abatemarco as Rothko and Patrick Stafford as his young assistant, Ken, Red, opens this weekend at International City Theatre in the Long Beach Performing Arts Center.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts will present 30 Americans, an exhibition surveying works by many of the nation's leading African American artists working since the mid-1970s. Often provocative and challenging, the exhibition explores how artists relate their own sense of self to ideas within history, popular culture and contemporary mass media central to American society. 30 Americans will be on view in the Center's Ingram Gallery from Oct. 11, 2013 through Jan. 12, 2014.

Nelson De La Nuez, The King of Pop Art, Presents Pop Icons: The Exhibition, at Bruce Lurie Gallery Reception, 8/17

International pop artist Nelson De La Nuez will be personally appearing at the Bruce Lurie Gallery for an artist's champagne and wine reception on Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 6:00-10:00 pm. The Nelson De La Nuez 'Pop Icons' show will be comprised of original works, limited edition pieces, and brand new releases. The artist will also have his coffee table books, 'Pop Americana: The Pop Art of Nelson De La Nuez' available for signing. The 'Pop Icons' show will run in its entirety from Thursday, August 15th, which is an advanced Preview night, through September 7th, with the artist's rotating body of work remaining at the gallery on a permanent basis.
