ZACH Theatre-Austin's Theatre and Texas' longest running theatre, presents the next production of the 2013-14 Family Series, THE CAT IN THE HAT. ZACH Theatre brings the classic children's book THE CAT IN THE HAT to life in a wild ride of physical comedy, playing February 21 through May 3, 2014, on the intimate Kleberg Stage. In partnership with Art on 5th, original artwork by Theodor Seuss Geisel - Dr. Seuss, will be on display at ZACH Theatre for the duration of the show.

From June 24 to October 13, 2014, Madrid is to host the largest retrospective held to date on the British artist Richard Hamilton. The exhibition, organized by the Reina Sofía, was designed specifically for the Madrid museum by Hamilton himself, who became directly involved with the work when he visited the city in the early months of 2010.
Flashdance - The Musical, the stage adaptation of the 1983 hit film that defined a generation, will run at the Community Center Theater from February 4 - 9, 2014, as part of California Musical Theatre's Broadway Sacramento series. With electrifying dance at its core, Flashdance - The Musical tells the inspiring and unforgettable story of Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel mill welder by day and a bar dancer by night with dreams of one day becoming a professional performer. When romance with her steel mill boss threatens to complicate her ambitions, Alex learns the meaning of love and its power to fuel the pursuit of her dream.
The Spalding Gray National Consortium has announced that playwright and director Richard Maxwell is the recipient of the 2014 Spalding Gray Award. Named after the groundbreaking monologist Spalding Gray (1941-2004), the award is sponsored by the consortium that includes Kathleen Russo, Gray's widow; the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; On the Boards in Seattle; Performance Space 122 in New York; and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. It comes with a $20,000 commission to create a new work and provides for a full production of that work by each organization. In his new work, Maxwell will collaborate with choreographer Sarah Michelson, who will take charge of the production's design, and actor Gary Wilmes, one of Maxwell's oldest friends and collaborators.

Shining East Productions presents The Sun Shines East, based on a true story written by Corinne Chateau* about an adoptive mother's struggle to break through deep personal barriers and international politics to bring home her daughter. Ai Weiwei: According to What?, the first North American survey of the work of the provocative Chinese conceptual artist, sculptor, photographer, filmmaker, and activist-will be presented at the Brooklyn Museum from April 18 to August 10, 2014. This will be the first large-scale museum exhibition of Ai's work in New York and the final presentation on the exhibition's tour. The Brooklyn Museum will include several major works not seen in previous venues.
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, producer of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, will partner with theGreater Pittsburgh Arts Council to host an informal discussion – open to any and all visual and performing artists – regarding opportunities to participate in the 55th annual Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, being held June 6-15, 2014. So, 109 shows reviewed in 2013 (with a couple more to come) - how to choose the best from that lot! Of course, I can't, as the variety and quality of London's theatre make comparisons invidious.

Basquiat, a new musical about the life and times of 80's art-star, Jean Michele Basquiat just premiered a special concert version of the show at Joe's Publast night, December 16th. The performers included Eric LaJuan Summers (Motown: The Musical) as well as Lena Hall (Kinky Boots) and Felicia Finley(Mama Mia, The Wedding Singer). Other performers include Ken Robinson (Memphis), Julius Thomas III (Motown: The Musical) Chad Carstarphen (In the Heights), Benjamin Mapp, Jimmy Lambert, Roger DeWitt, Eddie Varley andNikki Kimbrough (A Night with Janis Joplin). After more than a year of numerous extensions, LA's most beloved theatrical magic show, Smoke and Mirrors, is officially closing on Dec. 31. Ring in 2014 with spellbinding illusions, a life-sized rabbit and a timeless story that is as mesmerizing as it is heartwarming at the Road on Lankershim in the NoHo Arts District now in its final run through Dec. 29 with two New Year's Eve shows on Dec. 31 at 6:30 p.m. and a late night show at 10:00 p.m (Midnight Countdown party includes champagne, hors d'oeuvre and favors).
