Jill Garland Named Senior Director of Development at the Public Theater

The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) announced today that Jill Garland has been named the new Senior Director of Development. Garland comes to The Public Theater with 15 years of experience as the Director of Development of Playwrights Horizons and most recently worked as the Vice President of Development at Nyack Hospital for the past two years.

Brooklyn Museum Acquires Important Collection of Works from Black Arts Movement

The Brooklyn Museum has acquired an important collection of works of art created in conjunction with the revolutionary Black Arts Movement of the late 1960s to mid-1970s. The group of forty-four works by twenty-six artists was assembled by former Chicago dealers David Lusenhop and Melissa Azzi, whose goal was to preserve and promote works by leading African American visual artists involved in the movement. The acquisition was made by purchase directly from Lusenhop and Azzi as private collectors with a combination of funds devoted to the collection of American art at the Brooklyn Museum.

KC Rep Adds FIRST PAGE New Play Workshop to Spring 2013 Season, 2/8-3/2

Kansas City Repertory Theatre is pleased to announce the launch of First Page New Play Workshop, a four-week event developed by the Rep to foster new works by local and national theatre artists. First Page will follow a playwright's concept as it evolves from the first spark of an idea into a successful new script or theatrical production. All events will take place at Copaken Stage, 13th and Walnut in Kansas City, MO.

The Public Theater Presents Soho Rep's Production of Nature Theater Production of OK's 'LIFE AND TIMES', Now thru 2/2

The Public Theater announced that it will present the Soho Rep production of the American premiere of the Nature Theater of Oklahoma's LIFE AND TIMES: Episodes 1-4 as a special engagement of the 2013 Under the Radar Festival. Conceived and directed by Pavol Liska and Kelly Copper, the epic serial saga LIFE AND TIMES will run tonight, January 16 through February 2, 2013. The 2013 Under the Radar Festival will run January 9 through 20, 2013 at The Public Theater at Astor Place, 425 Lafayette Street.

Ma-Yi Theater Company Presents JESUS IN INDIA, Opening 2/21

The Ma-Yi Theater Company will present the East Coast premiere of JESUS IN INDIA, a new play by Lloyd Suh (American Hwangap), directed by Daniella Topol. The play will be performed Off-Broadway at The Theatre at St. Clements (423 West 46th Street, between 9th and 10th Aves) from Tuesday, February 12 through Sunday, March 10, 2013. OSF Receives Mellon Playwright-in-Residence Grant

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival recently learned that it is among a select number of national theaters to receive playwright-in-residence grants developed for producing theaters by the Performing Arts Program at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Alliance Theatre Receives Grant from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a grant to the Alliance Theatre to create a three-year Playwright In Residence staff position. Designed to advance the role of playwrights in American theatre, the goals of the residencies include providing playwrights with space, time and resources; and positively influencing the working environment of theatres by embedding playwrights on their staffs.

Pacific Symphony to Dive Into New Year with Mozart's REQUIEM, 1/31-2/3

Featuring four world-class vocalists, soprano-Sharla Nafziger, mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer, tenor Brian Stucki, bass-baritone Derrick Parker-and the angelic voices of the Pacific Chorale, the program also includes Mozart's Masonic Funeral Music, Fantasia in F Minor for solo organ, featuring organist Jung-A Lee, Ave verum corpus, plus, excerpts from and the Overture to 'The Magic Flute.' Taking place Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 3, at 8 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the concert includes a preview talk at 7 p.m. and a post-concert talkback with Symphony advisor Joseph Horowitz and Maestro St.Clair.

Piero della Francesca in America Exhibition Begins 2/2 at the Frick

Piero della Francesca was revered in his own time as a 'monarch' of painting. Yet by the end of the sixteenth century his achievements had sunk into obscurity. During the nineteenth century, however, British and American collectors on the European Grand Tour rediscovered the master's works and resurrected his reputation, and today Piero is widely acknowledged as one of the founders of the Italian Renaissance.

NYTW to Present Amy Herzog's BELLEVILLE, Beginning 2/12

New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) Artistic Director James C. Nicola and Managing Director William Russo have announced that the New York premiere of Belleville, written by Amy Herzog and directed by Anne Kauffman, will begin performances Tuesday, February 12 at NYTW, 79 East 4 Street, between Bowery and Second Avenue. Opening night is set for Sunday, March 3 at 7pm. Belleville is scheduled to run through Sunday, March 31.

Huntington Theatre Company Names Melinda Lopez a Playwright-in-Residence

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the Huntington Theatre Company $245,000 so that Huntington Playwriting Fellow Melinda Lopez (Sonia Flew, Becoming Cuba) can join the company's full-time staff as playwright-in-residence. The award is one of 14 residency grants at theatre companies around the US announced this month. Lopez will begin her residency on July 1, 2013.

DTC Receives Mellon Grant for Playwright-in-Residence

Dallas Theater Center announced today that The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded it a grant to support a three-year playwright residency. Award-winning playwright and 2010 Meadows Prize recipient Will Power will be DTC's new playwright in residence.

Kiki Smith to Appear With Dr. Alexander Nagel at The Jewish Museum, 1/17

A conversation program with acclaimed artist Kiki Smith and Dr. Alexander Nagel of the Institute of Fine Arts responding to the medieval manuscripts in the current exhibition, Crossing Borders: Manuscripts from the Bodleian Libraries, will take place on Thursday, January 17 at 6:30 pm at The Jewish Museum. In Writers & Artists Respond: Kiki Smith and Dr. Alexander Nagel, Smith and Nagel will use their individual artistic and research practices to frame the discussion. =Nagel's most recently published work, Medieval Modern: Art out of Time (2012, Thames and Hudson), will be available for purchase in the Museum's Cooper Shop after the event. This program continues Writers and Artists Respond, a series of thought provoking discussions and performances by artists, musicians and writers in The Jewish Museum's galleries.

Cutting Ball Theater Announces $166,000 Grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

San Francisco's cutting-edge Cutting Ball Theater announces that the company has been awarded a grant for $166,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to fund a three-year residency for resident playwright Andrew Saito. The grant will give Saito a full time salary and health benefits at Cutting Ball for the entire three years, with options to receive additional developmental funds. The grant is Cutting Ball's largest grant to date.
